Undefeated! MMS 8th Grade Volleyball Captures Patriot League North Championship
Bullpups finish perfect season with tournament sweep at El Dorado, claim league title
EL DORADO — The McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball team capped off a storybook season Saturday, claiming the Patriot League North Championship with a 4-0 performance at the tournament held at El Dorado Middle School.
The Bullpups remained undefeated on the season at 19-0, sweeping through pool play before battling through a dramatic three-set championship match against rival Prairie Hills Middle School (Buhler).
McPherson opened pool play with a commanding 25-8, 25-13 victory over El Dorado, shaking off early jitters with strong serving and passing. The Bullpups then dispatched Prairie Hills 25-10, 25-17 in their second match, playing with exceptional energy and court coverage.
"They played on their toes, did a great job covering for tips and over-passes at the net, and swung great when attacking," said head coach Christine Pianalto.
In the semifinal bracket, McPherson faced a tough test against Haysville West's strong passing attack. After some unforced errors in the opening set, the Bullpups regrouped to win 25-17, 25-19, advancing to the championship game.
The title match provided the day's most dramatic moment as Prairie Hills, eager for revenge, pushed McPherson to three sets. The Bullpups dominated the first set 25-16 before faltering in the second, losing 27-25.
But McPherson showed championship mettle in the decisive third set, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and maintaining their composure to close out the match 15-11.
"They did not hang their heads, but stayed ahead due to mental toughness, quick feet, and strong serving," Pianalto said. "I'm so proud of this team and the effort they've demonstrated throughout the season. Their joy when playing is infectious."
The coach praised her team's ability to battle back from deficits and develop leadership throughout the season.
"They've played with a lot of heart," Pianalto added. "I've truly loved coaching them. I look forward to seeing what they'll accomplish together next year in high school."
