Early in-person voting is underway for the Aug. 4 primary election, and Reno County officials are reminding unaffiliated voters they can still choose a party ballot at the polls. Early voting began Wednesday at the Reno County Annex, 125 W. First Ave., and runs through noon on Aug. 3.

Reno County Clerk Jenna Fager said unaffiliated voters who want to participate in the partisan primaries must ask an election worker for a party affiliation card before receiving their ballot. By completing the card, the voter officially joins either the Democratic or Republican party and receives that party's ballot. Unaffiliated voters who prefer not to join a party will receive a nonpartisan ballot containing only a proposed constitutional amendment.

The option to switch at the polls is exclusively for unaffiliated voters. The deadline for registered Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and United Kansas voters to change their party affiliation was June 1. A registered Republican, for example, cannot request a Democratic ballot. Third-party voters will only receive the nonpartisan constitutional amendment ballot.

Voters who affiliate with a major party at the polls will remain registered with that party through Sept. 1. After that date, they can submit a new voter registration application to return to unaffiliated status. Early voting is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Annex, and voters must bring a valid photo ID.
