Two Inman High School teams qualify for world wind energy competition
McPherson County students take top state honors in STEM challenge

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Two teams from Inman High School are headed to an international STEM competition after capturing the top two spots in their division at the Kansas KidWind State Finals. The Trade Winds team of Dylan Schmidt and Jayden Roots took first place in the ninth- through 12th-grade KidWind Generator category during the April 11 contest in Salina, while the Wonderful Winders team of Codi Howard, Megan Gibson and June Edgar secured second. By finishing atop their division, both McPherson County groups qualified to compete at the World KidWind Challenge, set for May 18-21 in Madison, Wis.
The Inman students were among 35 teams from 25 schools that advanced to the state finals following a record-breaking regional season that drew 106 participating teams. Sponsored by the Kansas Corporation Commission and K-State Engineering Extension through a U.S. Department of Energy grant, the annual event challenges students to design, build and test working wind turbines. Judges evaluate teams on their turbine's energy production, engineering design and overall knowledge of energy basics, emphasizing real-world problem-solving, teamwork and scientific measurement.
