HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two student teams from Allen STEM Magnet School captured first-place titles at the Kansas KidWind State Finals, earning spots to compete in the World KidWind Challenge this May in Madison, Wis. The "Whirlwinds" won the fourth- and fifth-grade division, while the "Mavericks" took top honors in the sixth- through eighth-grade category. Both Hutchinson teams secured their victories April 11 in Salina, rising to the top of a 35-team state field that originally advanced from a record-breaking 106 regional competitors.

The annual engineering competition challenges groups of three to five students to design, construct and test functional wind turbine generators. During the state tournament, judges evaluated the Allen STEM Magnet School students on their turbines' energy production, structural design and foundational knowledge of energy concepts. The educational initiative, which promotes science, technology, engineering and math skills, is coordinated by the Kansas Corporation Commission and K-State Engineering Extension using a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
