TORRINGTON, Wyo. - The city council unanimously approved the third and final reading of an ordinance regulating the use of human-powered scooters, skateboards, electric bicycles and powered scooters on Tuesday. Police Chief Matt Johnson noted that no public concerns had been raised since the previous reading and emphasized the ordinance's role in ensuring child safety. Torrington is reportedly one of the first cities of its size in Wyoming to enact specific regulations addressing the growing prevalence of electric micro-mobility devices.
Councilman cites safety concerns regarding e-bike fatalities
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - During the discussion on the new e-scooter ordinance, Councilman Dennis Kelly highlighted national statistics regarding the dangers of electric bicycles. Kelly cited a recent New York Times article stating that while traditional bicycle accidents result in fatalities in one out of 100 cases, e-bike and scooter accidents result in fatalities in 11 out of 100 cases. Kelly expressed support for the ordinance's helmet requirement for minors, noting the high speed and silent operation of the devices.
City approves contract for airport pavement maintenance
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - The council voted unanimously to approve an addendum to the professional services agreement with M.C. Schaff and Associates for the fiscal year 2026 Torrington Airport seal coat and pavement marking project. Public Works Director Jeff Harkins stated the engineering costs will not exceed $28,261. The project is funded through a cost-sharing agreement in which the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) covers 90 percent of the cost, leaving the city responsible for only 10 percent, or approximately $2,826 for this phase.
Sewer rehabilitation project begins with grant funding
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - During the approval of bills, the council authorized a payment to Azuria Water Solutions regarding the city’s sewer and manhole lining project. Treasurer Dana Strecker confirmed that the project, funded through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), has officially commenced. This payment represents the first application for the infrastructure improvements aimed at rehabilitating the city’s wastewater systems.
Firefighters announce 'Shop with a Cop' and Santa visits
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Fire Chief Luis Correa announced the fire department’s upcoming community engagement schedule for the holiday season. The department will assist local law enforcement with the "Shop with a Cop" event on Dec. 12. Additionally, firefighters will escort Santa Claus to local schools, daycares and the Evergreen facility on Dec. 15 and 16 to visit with children and residents.
College officials discuss rodeo team and county partnership
GOSHEN COUNTY, Wyo. - Jeffry Hawes and a college administrator from Eastern Wyoming College attended the meeting to outline future plans for the institution. Hawes’ presentation focused primarily on the college’s rodeo team and fostering a stronger relationship between the county and the college.
