TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The Torrington City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the second of three required readings for a new ordinance regulating electric bicycles, e-scooters and skateboards. The proposed regulations, developed by Police Chief Matt Johnson, include requirements for headlights and taillights between sunset and sunrise and aim to enhance safety for young riders. Johnson noted the ordinance focuses on education over punishment for children and has received positive public feedback, particularly for its provisions promoting helmet use and safe passage for students on the city’s walking path. The ordinance will face a final vote at the Dec. 2 council meeting.
Fire department prepares for holiday community events
TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The Torrington Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up for a busy holiday season of community engagement, Fire Chief Luis Correa announced Tuesday. Firefighters will be assisting with the annual Christmas parade on Dec. 5 and making their traditional visits with Santa Claus to local schools and daycares. The department will also participate in the "Shop with a Cop" event on Dec. 12, transporting children in fire engines from Bomgaars to the Elks Lodge for gift wrapping.
Fire chief reports on recent semi rollover, grass fires
TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Fire Chief Luis Correa updated the council on recent incidents, including a significant semi-truck rollover on Main Street that shut down the road and railroad traffic for five hours. The driver sustained only minor injuries. The department also responded to two mutual aid calls for grass fires, one in Nebraska started by a vehicle fire and another near Yoder sparked by a train. Correa used the report to remind residents to call the police non-emergency line at (307) 532-7001 to report any controlled burns, even small ones, to prevent unnecessary emergency responses.
Construction update: snag delays Well 16, East Street paving progresses
TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Several major city infrastructure projects are advancing, though a setback has occurred at the Well 16 site, Public Works Director Jeff Harkins reported Tuesday. Harkins informed the council that incorrectly installed pipe sections will need to be reoriented for the water flow meter to function properly, causing a delay. Meanwhile, the East Street project is nearing its winter shutdown, with paving completed to 22nd Avenue and scheduled to reach 24th Avenue before pausing until spring. Work also continues on the wastewater treatment plant and the city’s sewer lining project.
Commissioners approve Meadowlark Subdivision plat
GOSHEN COUNTY, Wyo. - Following a presentation by County Surveyor Bob Taylor, the commissioners voted to approve the plat map for the Meadowlark Subdivision. The approval process included a review of the road and bridge report presented by County Planner Michael Tietjen and Road and Bridge Superintendent Chris Stoddard. The Wyoming State Engineer’s Office had previously deemed the subdivision's water distribution plan satisfactory in mid-October.
Fire warden lifts Stage 1 fire restrictions
GOSHEN COUNTY, Wyo. - Goshen County Fire Warden Thom Bozeman announced via his written monthly report that Stage 1 fire restrictions have been lifted for the county. The decision follows a review of current conditions, and Bozeman noted there was "nothing further to report" regarding fire danger at this time.
