Council approves interim power cost adjustment application

TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Facing a 154 percent spike in wholesale electrical transmission costs, the Torrington City Council unanimously approved an interim power cost adjustment application to the Wyoming Public Service Commission. If approved by the state, the measure will raise electricity rates by 2 cents per kilowatt-hour starting Nov. 1, resulting in an estimated $11.73 monthly increase for the average residential customer. City officials emphasized the necessity of the application to prevent depleting the city's $3.3 million electric reserve fund, noting the city's transmission bill from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska jumped from $39,000 to $110,000 a month due to federal grid expansions and regional transmission organization costs.

Torrington Fire Department secures regional SAFER grant

TORRINGTON, Wyo. — The Torrington Volunteer Fire Department, in partnership with departments from LaGrange, Hawk Springs and Yoder, has been awarded a regional Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant. Fire Chief Jefferson Schick reported the grant will be utilized over the next four years to boost recruitment and retention efforts across Goshen County. Schick also reported the department recently completed annual testing on more than 11,000 feet of fire hose, with only 200 feet failing inspection.

Police department's 'Fugitive Night' draws over 100 local youths

TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Police Chief Matthew Johnson reported the success of the department's recent "Fugitive Night" at Cottonwood Golf Course, an event designed to build positive relationships with local youth. Funded entirely by over $3,000 in private donations, the event challenged more than 100 students to navigate the dark golf course to retrieve a challenge coin while evading upperclassmen armed with archery tag equipment. Johnson noted the event provided a safe, engaging environment for the community's youth.

Council approves sidewalk stencil fundraiser for THS girls basketball

TORRINGTON, Wyo. — The Torrington City Council unanimously approved an exterior property painting request from the Torrington High School girls basketball program to stencil Torrington High School logos on local sidewalks. The project will serve as a team-building fundraiser to purchase travel gear and warm-up shirts for the players. The team plans to sell 30 to 45 stencils to local businesses and residents, which will be painted in THS Trailblazer colors.

Main street closure approved for annual Trunk or Treat event

TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Downtown Torrington will host its annual Trunk or Treat event on Friday, Oct. 30, following the Torrington City Council's unanimous approval of a special event permit for Goshen County Economic Development. To accommodate the expected crowd of up to 3,000 people, Main Street will be closed from Valley Road to 23rd Avenue from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The council also approved waiving the $200 permit fee and an estimated $850 in city costs for police and fire department support.
