IEA Predicts Oil Glut Next Year if Middle East Peace Holds
The International Energy Agency predicted Wednesday that a glut of oil could emerge next year if the Middle East peace deal holds, as crude production surges following the recent Iran conflict. In its monthly oil market report, the agency forecast a gradual resumption of oil flows from the Gulf this year as countries revive oilfields that had been shut for months. Production would then rise by 8 million barrels a day to 110 million barrels a day by next year, far ahead of a relatively modest 2 million barrel-a-day increase in global demand, the analysts said. The agency described the resulting overhang as a potential opportunity to replenish depleted inventories or build new strategic reserves, noting that oil stocks in OECD countries had fallen to their lowest level since 1990. The forecast follows the announcement of the agreement between Washington and Tehran, with the two sides preparing to sign an interim peace deal Friday that would extend the current ceasefire for 60 days. Oil prices have fallen sharply since the deal was announced, with Brent crude trading around $79 a barrel Wednesday, down from about $87 late last week and a peak of $126 at the end of April.

Southern Republicans Redraw Maps After Court Weakens Voting Rights Act
A Supreme Court ruling in late April narrowed the reach of the Voting Rights Act, prompting Republican lawmakers in several Southern states to redraw their congressional maps. The decision opened the door for Republicans, who hold supermajorities in many Southern legislatures, to pursue additional Democratic-held House districts, reviving a redistricting fight that had appeared to be winding down. Critics say the new maps weaken the voting power of Black residents by dividing districts where they form a majority, in a region with a long history of racial discrimination. Republicans counter that race-conscious districting was a necessary remedy when the Voting Rights Act was enacted in 1965 but is no longer justified today, and they maintain that their changes were driven by partisan advantage rather than race. Voting in the South remains racially polarized, and Black voters have historically supported Democratic candidates.

SpaceX Passes Amazon in Value After $60 Billion Cursor Deal
SpaceX surpassed Amazon in market value on June 16, 2026, ending the day as the world's fifth-largest public company after its shares climbed 4.8 percent. The gain came as the company signed an all-stock merger agreement to acquire Cursor maker Anysphere, in a deal valuing the startup at $60 billion, reported as the largest acquisition of an AI developer-tools company on record. The agreement, disclosed in an 8-K filing, came four days after SpaceX's record Nasdaq debut, and its shares have risen nearly 50 percent in their first two days of trading. Anysphere is to become a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary, with its shares converted into SpaceX Class A stock at a closing expected in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Separately, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched three AST SpaceMobile BlueBird Block 2 direct-to-cell satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station early on June 17, with the first stage completing its 29th landing on a drone ship. The Block 2 satellites, carrying communications arrays of up to 2,400 square feet, expand AST SpaceMobile's constellation from seven to ten as the company works toward a goal of 45 by late 2026.

Trump Vows to Release Iran Deal Text as G7 Endorses Agreement
President Donald Trump said on June 16, 2026, at the Group of Seven summit in Évian, France, that he would publicly release the text of his agreement with Iran within a couple of days, and suggested he might read the document aloud on camera. Trump said the deal had been digitally signed earlier in the week and would open a 60-day window for negotiations covering Iran's highly enriched uranium and the lifting of sanctions, insisting that the United States is not investing any money in Iran. Vice President JD Vance said the text could be published as soon as June 17, with an official signing expected later in the week in Switzerland. The G7 leaders said they support the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran and are ready to contribute to its implementation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded that the administration brief congressional leaders and the rest of Congress, saying two days had passed since Trump claimed a deal without releasing details. Democrats criticized the administration's handling of the conflict with Iran.
