Trump Extends Iran Strike Deadline as Oil Reclaims $100
President Trump backed away Monday from his threat to strike Iranian power plants, citing "productive conversations" between American and Iranian officials — the first direct contact since the war began more than three weeks ago. Iranian officials publicly denied any negotiations were underway, and U.S. officials described the contacts as early-stage. Some reports suggest American officials have been in contact with Iran's speaker of parliament, though the reports conflict and remain unconfirmed — if accurate, the contradiction between those contacts and Tehran's public denials may indicate competing factions within the Iranian regime. Trump extended his 48-hour deadline to Friday, giving diplomacy a narrow window after the original deadline expired Monday. Oil initially sold off on the postponement but climbed back above $100 a barrel after Tehran denied direct talks and launched fresh strikes against Gulf neighbors. The reversal set off a flurry of international diplomacy, though it remained unclear how seriously the White House viewed the potential for a breakthrough in a conflict both sides have steadily escalated.

Open-Source Trackers Flag Massive U.S. Troop Airlift Toward Middle East
Open-source intelligence analysts and flight-tracking accounts have identified at least 35 C-17 transport flights from U.S. military bases to the Middle East since March 12, with 11 additional flights en route. The flights originated from bases including Hunter Army Airfield at Fort Stewart, Georgia; Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; and Pope Army Airfield at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Separate reports indicate the buildup extends beyond stateside bases, with Marine units from the Indo-Pacific also redirected toward the region. Destinations include Ovda Air Base in Israel and King Faisal Air Base and King Hussein International Airport in Jordan. Analysts noted the five-day strike deadline Trump set coincides with both the projected arrival window of these forces and the close of U.S. markets on Friday. The scale of the airlift suggests a significant buildup of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine units across the theater.

Runway Collision at LaGuardia Kills Two Pilots, Injures 41
An Air Canada Express jet arriving from Montreal struck a firefighting vehicle on a runway at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday while traveling well over 100 mph, killing both pilots and injuring 41 others, including passengers, crew and two rescue officers. The crash occurred at approximately 11:37 p.m. after an air-traffic controller cleared the rescue truck to cross Runway 4; the truck had been responding to a United flight that declared an emergency over an odor in the cabin. Tower audio captured the controller urgently calling "stop stop stop" roughly seven seconds after the truck confirmed its crossing. One pilot and one flight attendant were found by rescuers outside the aircraft on the ground. The FAA imposed a full ground stop until Monday afternoon, and the airport reopened at 2 p.m. with only one runway operational. The Port Authority said travelers should expect residual delays and cancellations.

ICE Officers Deploy to Airports as TSA Agents Work Without Pay
Up to 150 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were deployed to airports across the United States on Monday, a move the Trump administration framed as addressing long security lines caused by a shortage of TSA agents working without pay during the partial government shutdown. ICE officers were seen at several airports walking in small groups through check-in areas and standing near exits, though their exact duties remained unclear. Unlike TSA agents, ICE personnel are being paid during the shutdown. Democratic lawmakers and the union representing TSA officers denounced the deployment as disruptive, unsafe and unhelpful.

CFO Survey: AI Will Not Trigger Major Job Cuts in 2026
A survey of roughly 750 chief financial officers found that artificial intelligence had essentially no employment effect in 2025, and executives expect it to reduce overall head counts by only about 0.4% this year. The study, released as a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research, was conducted in late 2025 and early 2026 in partnership with the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Richmond. Where cuts do come, CFOs said workers in routine, clerical and administrative roles face the highest displacement risk, while highly skilled workers such as architects and engineers are more likely to keep their positions, especially if they incorporate AI into their workflows. Duke University economist John Graham, who has surveyed CFOs for 30 years, said higher-skilled workers could eventually be affected but probably not this year. Graham noted that CFOs are uniquely positioned to assess AI's impact because their role requires close monitoring of how company resources are deployed.

March 24 1946: Soviets Pull Troops from Iran, Early Cold War Showdown Averted
The Soviet Union agreed to withdraw its forces from Iran within six weeks, ending one of the first major postwar confrontations with the United States. Although Truman claimed tough U.S. pressure forced the move, the withdrawal actually followed a secret oil concession deal with Iran, and the episode deepened mutual suspicion that helped set the tone for the emerging Cold War. Control over Iran’s oil resources loomed large throughout the standoff, driving competing Soviet, British, and American efforts to secure concessions and shaping the U.S. decision to back Tehran.
