Iranian Attacks on Hormuz Trigger Largest Oil Disruption in History
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck three cargo ships attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday and warned that any additional vessels would be targeted, effectively paralyzing traffic through the only sea route out of the Persian Gulf. The U.S. has declined repeated requests from oil companies for tanker escorts, with defense officials saying it is too dangerous to send warships into the narrow waterway while Iranian fire, naval mines and submarines remain active threats. Two foreign tankers carrying Iraqi fuel oil were also ablaze in Iraqi waters after being hit by projectiles in a separate incident. The International Energy Agency slashed its forecast for global oil-supply growth from 2.4 million barrels per day to 1.1 million, calling the conflict the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. A record release of strategic oil reserves announced Wednesday failed to halt surging prices, with Brent crude futures approaching $100 a barrel again on Thursday. Shippers are bracing for an extended closure of the waterway, with industry officials warning that traffic could take months to recover even after hostilities end.

How Brent and WTI Crude Benchmarks Differ and Why It Matters
Brent and West Texas Intermediate are the two most widely quoted crude oil benchmarks, but they represent different products from different regions. WTI is priced at Cushing, Oklahoma, and drawn from landlocked fields in Texas and Oklahoma, serving as the primary benchmark for American producers and refiners. Brent represents a basket of North Sea crudes priced at the coast and serves as the dominant global reference, with roughly three-quarters of internationally traded crude priced off it. The gap between them, known as the Brent-WTI spread, shifts based on U.S. inventory levels, pipeline capacity and global supply disruptions, making it one of the most closely watched signals in energy markets.
Not all crude oil is the same, and refineries are built to process specific types based on how heavy or light the oil is. West Texas shale crude is very light and suited to simpler refineries geared toward gasoline production, like those on the East Coast. Venezuelan heavy crude requires complex facilities with specialized coker units, like the massive Gulf Coast refineries that invested billions to handle dense barrels. Saudi Arabian Light falls in the middle as a medium-weight crude that most mid-complexity refineries worldwide can process efficiently, which is why it has been so widely traded for decades.

Trump Advisers Weigh Iran Exit as Oil Prices and Political Pressure Rise
President Trump is signaling that he wants to wind down the war with Iran less than two weeks after launching it, facing rising oil prices and pushback from his political base over the prospect of another prolonged military engagement. Advisers are urging Trump to find an exit, calculating that halting the bombing and beginning to withdraw air and naval forces could stabilize global markets in the short term and ease voter anxiety. However, an early withdrawal would leave Iran's theocratic government intact, in possession of its nuclear stockpile and remaining missile arsenal, and effectively in control of oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that such an outcome could sacrifice the security of American allies in the region and increase the likelihood of a more devastating future conflict.

Iran-Linked Cyberattack Disables Thousands of Devices at U.S. Medical Firm
Hackers claiming to act on behalf of Iran launched a major cyberattack against Stryker, the medical devices company, disabling cellphones and laptops belonging to thousands of its roughly 56,000 employees on Wednesday. The company directed all employees to disconnect from networks and avoid turning on company-issued devices. The attack broadens the U.S.-Iran conflict into the cyber domain, adding to Iran's ongoing military responses that have included drone strikes on U.S. bases, rocket attacks on Israel and mine-laying in the Strait of Hormuz. Shares of the Michigan-based company, which manufactures joint implants and robotic surgery systems, fell 4% after reports of the breach.

Trump Launches Trade Probe Into 16 Nations to Revive Tariff Agenda
The Trump administration announced a new trade investigation Wednesday targeting 16 of America's largest trading partners over what it called unfair practices and excess factory capacity that have contributed to large, persistent U.S. trade deficits. The investigation targets China, the European Union, Japan, India, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the affected countries had been briefed but acknowledged the move is likely to further anger trading partners who spent months negotiating and making concessions to reduce previous tariffs. Those earlier levies were subsequently overturned by the Supreme Court, and the new investigation represents the administration's effort to resurrect its tariff agenda through a different legal pathway.

March 12 1968: Oil discovered in Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay
Prudhoe Bay’s discovery significantly boosted non-OPEC oil supply, strengthening U.S. energy security and reshaping global oil markets by moderating OPEC’s leverage on prices and supply. Globally, it showcased what it takes to extract Arctic oil at scale—massive infrastructure like the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and complex logistics using bush planes, sleds, and a 700‑square‑mile web of field pipelines to move billions of barrels from a remote permafrost region to world markets.
