Border Patrol Officer Fatally Shoots Minneapolis Man During Immigration Enforcement, Sparking Federal Standoff
A U.S. Border Patrol officer fatally shot a 37-year-old intensive-care nurse in Minneapolis on Saturday morning after confronting him while he filmed immigration enforcement activities, escalating tensions between Minnesota officials and the federal government. Alex Pretti, who was armed, was wrestled to the ground by several agents before being shot, with federal authorities claiming he "violently resisted" disarmament. However, bystander footage shows a federal officer pulling a handgun away from Pretti less than a second before another agent fired multiple rounds, which appears to differ from the official account. President Trump declined to say whether the officer acted appropriately, telling The Wall Street Journal on Sunday that the administration was "reviewing everything" despite public defense of the officer by other officials. Trump criticized Pretti for carrying a gun during the protest activity, stating he didn't like shootings but also didn't approve of someone bringing "a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines" to a demonstration.

Minneapolis Shooting Prompts Senate Democrats to Block Homeland Security Funding, Threatens Government Shutdown
Senate Democrats vowed to oppose Department of Homeland Security funding following the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis resident by a Border Patrol agent on Saturday, placing Congress on track toward a partial government shutdown next week. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats would not advance a six-bill spending package that includes funding for DHS, which oversees both Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The measure requires 60 votes and Democratic support to clear procedural hurdles. Temporary funding for departments representing more than 75 percent of federal discretionary spending, including the Pentagon, expires at midnight Friday, though Senate GOP leaders indicated they would proceed with the funding package despite Democratic opposition.

Free Solo Climber Scales 1,667-Foot Taipei 101 Without Rope
Alex Honnold, subject of the Oscar-winning documentary "Free Solo," successfully climbed Taiwan's 1,667-foot Taipei 101 skyscraper on Sunday without safety equipment, joining an exclusive group of roughly a dozen known skyscraper climbers worldwide. The largely underground sport remains illegal in most jurisdictions, with French climber Alain Robert—who has scaled approximately 200 buildings since the 1990s—reporting more than 170 arrests for his bare-handed ascents that present unique physical and mental challenges distinct from mountain climbing.

Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs if Canada Pursues Free Trade Agreement With China
President Trump threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada if Prime Minister Mark Carney pursues a free trade agreement with China, accusing Ottawa of attempting to create a "drop off port" for Chinese goods. The warning, posted on Truth Social on Saturday, followed Canada's announcement of a limited trade agreement with China that allows 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles annually into Canada at a reduced tariff rate in exchange for China lowering duties on Canadian agricultural products. Carney responded Sunday that Canada has no intention of pursuing a full free trade deal with China, stating the recent agreement merely addressed tariff issues that developed over the past two years and remains consistent with Canada's obligations under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact.

China Investigates Top General for Leaking Nuclear Secrets to United States
Chinese authorities placed Gen. Zhang Youxia, once considered President Xi Jinping's most trusted military ally, under investigation for allegedly leaking core technical data on China's nuclear weapons program to the United States and accepting massive bribes, according to sources familiar with a high-level military briefing held Saturday morning. The investigation announced by China's Ministry of National Defense also examines allegations that Zhang formed political cliques, abused his authority on the Communist Party's Central Military Commission, and accepted substantial payments in exchange for military promotions within the weapons procurement system. Zhang, China's senior-most general, allegedly provided classified information about the country's nuclear capabilities while overseeing the powerful agency responsible for military hardware research, development and procurement.
