Warming Trend Pushes Kansas Temperatures Twenty Degrees Above Average
After a cool weekend with highs in the 40s and 50s, Kansas will experience a significant warming trend starting today with temperatures climbing into the lower 60s under mostly sunny skies. The warming continues through Christmas, with highs in the 70s on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day threatening multiple record highs across the state. Wichita's forecast high of 75 degrees on Christmas Day would break the current record of 68 degrees set in 2019. A cold front arriving this weekend will bring temperatures back to reality, dropping into the 40s and 50s with gusty winds, though precipitation chances remain minimal.

Topeka Advances Incentive District for 3D-Printed Housing Development
The Topeka governing body unanimously approved a resolution establishing a public hearing for a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District to support 3D Homes Inc.'s construction of approximately 80 workforce housing units using innovative spin-cast concrete technology. The development will span three non-contiguous sites, with city inspectors working alongside the developer to ensure the novel construction method meets all safety and building codes. Deputy City Manager Braxton Copley confirmed the city's commitment to verifying compliance throughout the project. Trident 3D Printed Homes utilizes concrete as its primary building material, with robotic printers creating exterior and interior walls that form a cavity for utilities and insulation. The homes are fire-resistant, can withstand winds from F4 tornadoes, and offer significantly better energy efficiency than traditional construction due to concrete's thermal properties. Starting at $165,000, the homes can be completed in 2-4 months once printing begins, with the company currently printing under climate-controlled tents directly on-site at various Topeka locations. The company offers multiple floor plans ranging from a 2-bedroom, 1-bath, 1-car garage home to a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 2-car garage model, with duplex configurations also available. Buyers work with partnering architecture firm Architect One in Topeka to customize features and finishes, though the clean-lined, modern sensibility of the base designs complement various decorating styles. The homes meet international building codes, qualify for traditional financing, and are covered by standard homeowners insurance policies.

Jackson County, MO Proposes Quarter-Cent Sales Tax to Counter Kansas' Chiefs Stadium Bid
Jackson County officials unveiled a last-minute financial plan titled "Operation Save Arrowhead" to compete with Kansas' advancing negotiations to relocate the Chiefs across the state line, proposing a quarter-cent sales tax that would need voter approval in the April 7, 2026 general municipal election. Interim County Executive Phil LeVota emphasized that the team has not made a final decision on its future home, disputing portrayals of Kansas' offer as a done deal, while Legislative Chair DaRon McGee declared the county's commitment to keeping the team in its current location. The proposed 25-year tax would replace the current three-eighths-cent sales tax supporting both the Chiefs and Royals when it expires in 2031. LeVota presented the quarter-cent tax as a reduction for taxpayers, though it would extend stadium funding obligations that are scheduled to end in 2031 under current law. The Kansas Commerce Department released a statement Thursday confirming it is aggressively pursuing a new Chiefs stadium in Kansas but has not finalized any deal with the team for a cross-state relocation. County officials stressed they would not be fighting for the team if they didn't believe the Chiefs want to remain in Jackson County.

Wichita Brewing Company Shifts Production to El Dorado Partner Facility
Wichita Brewing Company co-founders Jeremy Horn and Greg Gifford will close their warehouse production facility at 727 E. Osie, transferring all regional distribution brewing and canning operations to Walnut River Brewing Company's El Dorado facility at 111 W. Locust starting next month. Horn said consumers in Wichita and outside markets likely won't notice the change, as WBC's beers will remain available through the new partnership arrangement, while the company's three Wichita restaurant locations will continue brewing beer onsite. The co-founders plan to sell the warehouse property and any equipment not needed by Walnut River.

Chiefs Suffer Worst Loss of Season as Third-String Quarterback Takes Over
A year after pursuing an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl championship with 23 wins in 24 games started by Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs absorbed a grim 26-9 loss to the Tennessee Titans, one of the NFL's worst teams, at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. The defeat followed last year's Super Bowl LIX loss to Philadelphia and marked a dramatic reversal from the pinnacle of motivation that had driven the franchise's historic winning streak. Just one week after Mahomes' season ended with a torn ACL, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew also suffered a significant knee injury during Sunday's game, forcing third-string practice-squad quarterback Chris Oladokun into action. Oladokun, a 2022 seventh-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will lead the Chiefs as starting quarterback for the final two games of the season, facing the rare challenge of a practice-squad player thrust into a starting role.
