Boeing Completes $4.7 Billion Acquisition of Wichita's Spirit AeroSystems

Boeing finalized its $4.7 billion acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems on Monday, returning the aerospace giant to Wichita after nearly two decades. The transaction, valued at $8.3 billion including Spirit's debt, was approved by the Federal Trade Commission with requirements that Boeing divest certain operations to prevent monopolistic control in the highly concentrated commercial aircraft market dominated by Boeing and Airbus. The acquisition reunites Spirit's commercial operations—including 737 fuselages and other structures—with Boeing's manufacturing system. Spirit Defense will continue as an independent supplier to the defense industry while aligning with Boeing Defense, Space & Security for financial reporting. U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran praised the deal as an opportunity to strengthen ties between Seattle and Wichita, bringing new prospects to the Air Capital of the World. Signs on Spirit buildings in Wichita were already being changed as the merger took effect.

Clearwater Residents Challenge Proposed Solar Farm Over Tax Concerns

Clearwater residents voiced strong opposition to a proposed solar farm at Tuesday night's city council meeting, citing concerns about tax subsidies, foreign investment, and environmental impacts from battery storage. The project, developed by Mission Clean Energy, promises to generate more than $2 million in annual tax revenue for Sedgwick County, but opponents fear local residents will bear increased costs through higher rates and taxes. Mayor Burt Ussery said the city will monitor the project as it moves through the Sedgwick County approval process. The opposition group plans to take their concerns directly to county commissioners, hoping to educate more Clearwater residents about the project before any final decision is made.
