Kansas GOP launches redistricting push to unseat Rep. Sharice Davids

Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Republican, is circulating a petition among lawmakers to call a special legislative session for mid-decade redistricting aimed at defeating Rep. Sharice Davids, the state's only Democrat in Congress. GOP leaders would need to rally nearly all members of their two-thirds majority in both chambers to call the session without Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's approval and override her expected veto of any redistricting plan. The move comes as part of a national trend following President Donald Trump's urging for Republican state lawmakers to secure a House GOP majority, with Texas, Missouri and California recently undertaking similar redistricting efforts.

Cold front brings rain, cooler temperatures to Kansas

A cold front moving through Kansas on Monday is bringing scattered showers, thunderstorms and cooler temperatures across the state, with patchy dense fog reducing visibility to a quarter-mile in some central Kansas locations during the morning hours. The front, which passed through Wichita around midday, is producing spotty rainfall with most communities receiving less than half an inch, though some areas in Ellsworth and Russell counties have recorded more than an inch. Temperatures ahead of the front reached the 70s and 80s but will drop into the 40s and 50s overnight, with Tuesday's highs only climbing into the low to mid-60s before warming back into the 70s and 80s by Wednesday through Friday.

India pilots call for Boeing 787 grounding after emergency power system deploys

India's largest pilots association has asked regulators to ground all Boeing 787s operating in the country for electrical inspections after an Air India flight unexpectedly deployed its emergency ram air turbine over the weekend. The device, which drops from the fuselage when a plane loses power or hydraulic pressure, activated during Air India Flight 117 from Amritsar to Birmingham, England, on Saturday, though the aircraft landed safely. The Federation of Indian Pilots, representing more than 6,000 pilots, said the deployment without any apparent power or hydraulic failure was highly unusual and warrants investigation of Air India's 34 Boeing 787s. The incident marks the second time since June that a ram air turbine has deployed on an Air India Boeing 787 — the previous deployment occurred during the fatal Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people on June 12.
