1. Kansas Health Officials Warn Travelers About Flesh-Eating Parasite

Kansas health officials are warning doctors and the public about the human risk from New World screwworm, a parasite spreading through Central America and Mexico. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the fly's larvae feed on living tissue, causing painful wounds that can be deadly if untreated, with more than 111,000 animal cases and 680 human infections reported so far according to the CDC. The parasite was eliminated in the U.S. in 1966 and Kansas officials say it poses no threat here unless residents travel to outbreak areas, urging travelers to cover open wounds, use insect repellent, and sleep indoors.

2. Kansas Milo Farmers Face Market Crisis Despite Bumper Crop

Kansas grain sorghum farmers are struggling with drastically low prices despite an excellent harvest this year, with milo dropping from $12.82 per hundredweight in 2022 to just $5.71 today. The Pawnee County Co-Op in Larned is shipping 1 million bushels by rail this month, but those sales of last year's product are cutting into this year's crop profits amid rising farming costs. Similar price drops have hit other Kansas crops, with wheat falling from $8.48 per bushel in 2022 to $4.22 today, creating financial challenges for farmers across the state during what should be a profitable harvest season.
