Marshall Pushes for Better Air Ambulance Funding
U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall took a helicopter ride Friday from Newman Regional Health in Emporia to highlight funding challenges facing emergency air medical services across Kansas. The Republican senator, who practiced medicine in Great Bend for 25 years, said he used helicopter services monthly during his medical practice and understands how critical air transport is for rural communities. Marshall met with LifeSave Kansas officials, a subsidiary of Air Methods that operates helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft from bases in Emporia, Liberal and Wichita. Company vice president Carolyn Mayle reported that government insurance programs don't cover the full cost of emergency flights, with 40% of patients on Medicare and 25% on Medicaid, creating financial obstacles for maintaining the statewide air medical network.

Kansas Governor Considers Redistricting as Texas Battle Intensifies
Gov. Laura Kelly joined other Democratic governors last week in raising the possibility of mid-decade congressional redistricting in Kansas if Texas follows through with redrawing its U.S. House maps to benefit Republicans. The rare redistricting fight has sparked a potential arms race among states as President Trump seeks to strengthen the GOP's narrow House majority ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Democrat Christy Davis Files to Challenge Sen. Marshall
Former congressional candidate Christy Davis officially filed to run as a Democrat for Sen. Roger Marshall's U.S. Senate seat, joining two other Democratic challengers for the 2026 race. Davis, who ran unsuccessfully for Kansas's First Congressional District in 2020, criticized Marshall at a June protest in Topeka, saying he "doesn't even live here" and fails to check presidential power while Kansas schools and farms suffer.

Mahomes Throws Quick TD in Chiefs' Preseason Loss
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made the most of his brief preseason debut Saturday, throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brownlee just 48 seconds into the game before sitting out the rest of the Chiefs' 20-17 loss to Arizona. The three-time Super Bowl champion's single completion came after the Cardinals fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Kansas City a short field and early 7-0 lead.
