Three teens arrested in Newton following fatal shooting of Kansas City media personality
Suspects face first-degree murder charges after a high-speed chase on I-135 ends with spike strips
NEWTON — Three 18-year-old men are facing first-degree murder charges following a highway pursuit that ended in their capture just hours after the fatal shooting of 64-year-old Kansas City media personality James Dodds. Aaron Johnson, Mark Elliott Nash Jr. and Marquel McGee, all residents of Kansas City, Kansas, were taken into custody without incident late Sunday after Newton police blocked city exit ramps and deployed spike strips to disable their fleeing vehicle near the 36th Street exit on Interstate 135. Dodds was shot outside his home Sunday evening and died from his injuries the following day.
The chase began after an automatic license plate reader in Chase County flagged the suspects' vehicle heading west on U.S. 50 at 11:08 p.m., prompting a Harvey County sheriff's deputy to attempt a traffic stop. Following the suspects' arrest, local law enforcement searched the interstate's shoulder on Monday and recovered firearms and ammunition they believe the teens threw from the moving car. Investigators suspect the recovered weapons were used in the killing of Dodds, and all three men remain held at the Harvey County Detention Center pending their transfer to Wyandotte County.
