Teen airlifted after Ellsworth County shooting

ELLSWORTH COUNTY, Kan. — Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a teenager with serious injuries last month in rural Kansas.

Holden Slaight, 18, sustained a gunshot wound to his upper right leg Sept. 28 at a residence in the 1300 block of Avenue F, according to Ellsworth County Sheriff Kenny Bernard.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting gunfire and a person down. Deputies responding to the scene shortly before 10 p.m. found Slaight on the kitchen floor with what investigators determined was a non-self-inflicted wound.

Emergency medical personnel treated Slaight at the scene before transporting him to Ellsworth County Medical Center. He was subsequently airlifted to a Wichita hospital for further treatment.

Bernard said the investigation remains active, though authorities have not released information about potential suspects or circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The sheriff's office has not disclosed Slaight's current condition or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
