Board reverses course on graduation cords in split vote

WINFIELD, Kan. — The USD 465 Board of Education voted 5-1 on Monday to approve the 2026-27 Winfield High School student and staff handbooks, adding a stipulation to continue the Renaissance Honor Cord program. The near-unanimous vote followed a citizen open forum where multiple people, including Camille and Rheegyn Richert, requested the board reinstate the academic recognition program, arguing the cords encourage rigorous coursework and provide meaningful recognition. The approved handbooks also authorize the continued use of stoles to recognize Latin honors distinctions at graduation.

District prepares for new state academic accountability measures

WINFIELD, Kan. — The district is preparing for new Kansas Education Systems Accountability measures focusing on graduation rates, as well as achievement in English language arts and mathematics. During a teaching and learning report, Director of Teaching and Learning Jennifer Ray shared that building leadership teams have already begun establishing goals and action steps to align with the new state expectations as the district works toward its January 2027 continuous improvement milestones.

Annual building needs assessments presented ahead of budget cycle

WINFIELD, Kan. — Superintendent Tricia Reiser presented the annual building needs assessments to the board, outlining building-level priorities that will inform the district's upcoming budgeting and resource allocation decisions. Board members will review the school-by-school assessments before their July meeting, when further budget discussions are scheduled. Reiser noted that previous assessments have successfully guided district decisions, pointing to the expansion of transportation services at the Winfield Early Learning Center as an example of responsiveness to the data.

District seeking applicants for recreation board vacancy

WINFIELD, Kan. — The board announced it will accept applications from the public to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Winfield Recreation Commission. The seat, currently held by Joe Wood, will expire on June 30. A board committee will review the applications and make a recommendation for appointment at a future meeting, emphasizing the need for a candidate with the schedule availability to attend regularly scheduled Winfield Recreation Commission meetings. Interested applicants must submit a letter of interest to the Clerk of the Board by June 17.

District approves over $200,000 for summer HVAC upgrades

WINFIELD, Kan. — The board unanimously approved a $206,387 purchase of new heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment for Irving Elementary School, Lowell Elementary School and the Winfield High School auxiliary gymnasium. Winfield Plumbing submitted the lowest bid meeting equipment specifications for the project, which includes $147,880 for equipment and $58,507 for installation. The upgrades will be funded through remaining district bond proceeds and are scheduled for completion before the start of the new school year.

Summer infrastructure projects underway as district adds online payment system

WINFIELD, Kan. — Assistant Superintendent Phil Bressler reported that numerous summer maintenance projects are currently underway, including a roof replacement at Winfield High School, district-wide parking lot repairs and playground surface work at Irving, Lowell and Whittier elementary schools. Bressler also announced the district will establish an additional bank account to implement SchoolCash, a new software system designed to improve tracking and internal controls for online payments, fundraisers and activity accounts.
