School board ratifies science camp trip following administrative delay

UINTA COUNTY, Wyo. — The Uinta County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees unanimously ratified Clark Elementary School's recent field trip to Uinta Science School, though the vote came after the trip had already concluded. Clark Elementary Principal Kimber Fessler addressed the delay in securing board approval prior to the weeklong excursion. During the meeting, concerns were raised over the potential liability of unapproved overnight trips, and whether the standing policy should be revised to avoid repetitive annual approvals or if it remains a necessary check to mitigate risk. Ultimately, the board agreed to maintain the current policy, emphasizing that all future overnight trips must be presented for approval in advance to protect the district from liability.

Board approves first reading of updated homeschooling policy

UINTA COUNTY, Wyo. — The board approved the first reading of an updated district homeschooling policy designed to align with revised state statutes and Wyoming School Boards Association recommendations. Under the new rules, parents or guardians must meet in person with a school administrator to provide written consent to withdraw their child, but the district will no longer require families to submit their homeschool curriculum for official review. The updated policy also addresses Educational Savings Account (ESA) students, clarifying that homeschool student participation in district-provided courses is only permissible if the district formally agrees to serve as an ESA service provider.

Trustees prepare for state school board conference and legislative advocacy

UINTA COUNTY, Wyo. — The board discussed upcoming state-level advocacy efforts ahead of the Wyoming School Boards Association (WSBA) Annual Conference, scheduled for Nov. 18–20 in Casper. A board member was designated to serve as the district's voting delegate for the assembly, representing Evanston's interests at the state level. It was noted that communication has already begun with the WSBA about pressing local concerns, including anticipated changes to educational funding silos, activities budgets and relations with the Wyoming Education Association under State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder.

North Elementary School celebrates academic growth and school culture

EVANSTON, Wyo. — North Elementary School Principal Summer Moore presented preliminary spring-to-spring growth data, celebrating significant academic gains among the school's third- through fifth-grade students. Moore highlighted an impressive 19 percent growth rate for third- to fourth-grade students in English Language Arts and 11 percent growth in math, alongside an overall school proficiency rate of 73 percent on MClass reading assessments. The school, which recently achieved Level 4 High Reliability Schools certification, is also utilizing specialized "tool skills" programs to help younger students master foundational math and reading fluency before tackling more complex state standards.

Evanston to host statewide music festival in January

EVANSTON, Wyo. — Evanston will host the Wyoming Music Educators Association All-State Music Festival from Jan. 17–19, 2027, an event expected to bring more than 1,000 students from across the state to the community. To accommodate the influx of visitors and the logistical demands placed on the music department and school facilities, Evanston High School students will participate in a scheduled virtual learning day on Tuesday, Jan. 19, to coincide with the festival's concluding events. Superintendent Joseph Ingalls noted the event is a rare opportunity for the city, as the district typically hosts the prestigious statewide festival only once every eight years.

District mechanic honored for assisting neighboring Utah school district

UINTA COUNTY, Wyo. — Uinta County School District No. 1 bus mechanic Randle Badertscher was publicly recognized by the board for his assistance to a neighboring school district in need. Superintendent Joseph Ingalls read a letter of gratitude from the Duchesne County School District in Utah, detailing how Badertscher sacrificed a holiday weekend to diagnose and repair a broken-down Duchesne County school bus that was stranded in Evanston following a sporting event. Badertscher was praised for remaining calm under pressure and proactively arranging for a loaner bus to ensure the visiting team could travel safely while their vehicle was repaired.
