ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Newly appointed trustee Laurel Gandy was unanimously elected as the board's clerk after she and Mina Aguilera Chavez were appointed by the board of trustees on July 6 to fill two vacant seats. Gandy takes over the Rock Springs position left vacant by the June 11 resignation of Dr. Chad Franks, who stepped down due to unexpected family issues, while Chavez fills the Wamsutter seat following the resignation of Anjelica Wood earlier in June. Following her swearing-in, Gandy stated she plans to file for election in August to retain the seat and emphasized her commitment to teamwork and understanding the roles and responsibilities required to positively affect Rock Springs students.
Rock Springs to welcome Green River athletes for indoor track
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Following Sweetwater County School District No. 2's decision to cut its indoor track program due to budget constraints, Sweetwater County School District No. 1 announced it will accept the displaced student-athletes. Superintendent Joe Libby stated that under Wyoming High School Activities Association bylaws, students can join a neighboring district's team if their home district drops the sport. The move aims to save the season for Green River athletes while giving District 2 time to potentially reinstate the program by 2027. According to Libby, any records broken by Green River athletes competing for Rock Springs will officially belong to Rock Springs High School.
Junior high teacher named district teacher of the year
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Rock Springs Junior High social studies teacher Caroline Smalstig was officially recognized as the Sweetwater County School District No. 1 Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Joe Libby announced the honor during his report to the board, noting that she emerged from a pool of highly qualified nominees. Smalstig will be formally celebrated by the board and her peers during the district's back-to-school opening session.
