Board unanimously approves administrative contracts amid public scrutiny
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The board of trustees unanimously approved the rehire of certified administrative staff for the 2026-27 school year, resolving a monthlong delay that drew heavy public criticism and debate. The board apologized for the anxiety the delay caused but said the extra time allowed trustees to more thoroughly review data, recalibration efforts and internal processes. During the discussion, the board noted three administrative positions will not be refilled next year as a cost-saving measure to address state funding concerns.
District commits to maintaining all athletic programs next year
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Despite facing a financial hit of more than $300,000 between Farson-Eden and Rock Springs high schools, the district will not reduce any athletics or activities for the upcoming school year. Superintendent Joseph Libby said the district will move forward with all programs, arguing that the opportunities provided to students far outweigh the budgetary challenges. Adjustments would be considered only if the Wyoming High School Activities Association reduces programs at the state level.
New Apple laptop purchase expected to yield significant savings
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The district is rolling out new Apple laptops for all third- and eighth-grade students, a move expected to generate substantial cost savings. District officials said the new models cost about half the price of previously purchased devices. The district also highlighted the financial benefit of purchasing four-year AppleCare plans for $159 per device. Since January 2024, the district said it has sent in 689 laptops for repair at no additional cost to taxpayers, avoiding standard display replacement fees of nearly $395 per incident.
BOCES presentation highlights return on taxpayer investment
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) presented its annual review, detailing the return on the district's mill levy contribution. The district averages a $300,000 annual contribution to BOCES, which in turn generates about $160,000 in direct savings for services the district would otherwise have to purchase independently. BOCES representatives also emphasized support provided to a district learning center, a partner program and districtwide special education and threat-assessment training.
Substitute teacher honored for saving choking student
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Desert View Elementary School recognized a long-term substitute teacher for quick, lifesaving action in the classroom. Last week, the substitute teacher successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on a first-grade student who stopped breathing after choking on a piece of candy. District officials praised the teacher's quick thinking and calm demeanor during the medical emergency. The names of the teacher and the student have not been publicly released by the district.
Trustees undergo intensive leadership and communication training
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — In an effort to improve governance and community relations, the board recently completed an eight-hour training session with a leadership consultant. The board noted the training focused on self-awareness, active listening and avoiding conversational "one-upping." The board expressed appreciation for the candid nature of the discussions, and plans to bring the consultant back in December to continue the work.
High school students praised for leadership during real evacuation
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Rock Springs High School Health Academy students were commended for their maturity during a recent building evacuation that interrupted a field trip for Pilot Butte Elementary students. Amid severe winter weather, the high school students helped supervise the younger students, conduct headcounts and keep the children calm and sheltered from the cold. The board praised the teenagers for acting as leaders and stepping seamlessly into roles often filled by adult staff.
Sage Elementary nurse named state school nurse of the year
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — April Buss, a district nurse at Sage Elementary with 19 years of medical experience, was named the 2025-26 Wyoming School Nurse of the Year by the Wyoming School Nurse Association. Buss, who manages the daily health and safety of more than 300 students in kindergarten through third grade, was selected by peers from across the state. Three other district nurses were also nominated for the award.
District honors five retiring educators and staff members
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The district honored five retiring staff members who have dedicated a combined 111 years to local students. The retirees include a physical education and health teacher with 34 years of service, a counselor with 31 years, a sixth-grade teacher with 19 years, a kindergarten teacher with 17 years and a resource teacher with 10 years of service. Names of the individual retirees were not immediately provided by the district.
