Board approves new high school course options including sign language

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Board of Education unanimously approved curriculum updates for Winfield High School on Monday, expanding course offerings for students. The changes allow students to fulfill their speech requirement through dual-enrollment interpersonal communication and speech courses at Cowley College. Additionally, gifted students with an individualized education program will now be allowed to take American Sign Language or other foreign languages, such as French and German, through an accredited outside provider when those courses are not offered by the district.


District considers i-Ready curriculum for K-8 math

WINFIELD, Kan. — The district's kindergarten through eighth grade math adoption committee presented a first reading of the proposed i-Ready Math curriculum to the Winfield Board of Education. If approved at a future meeting, the purchase would overhaul the math instructional materials used in elementary and middle school classrooms across Unified School District 465.


Local church donates approximately $3,300 to assist with student lunch balances

WINFIELD, Kan. — First United Methodist Church donated approximately $3,300 to Unified School District 465 to help cover student lunch balances. The board officially accepted the donation during Monday's meeting alongside several other community contributions. The funds will provide financial relief to local families with outstanding meal accounts across the district.


District receives over $10,000 in community and teacher grants

WINFIELD, Kan. — The school board accepted thousands of dollars in grants and donations Monday, including a $5,000 unrestricted donation from the Winfield Thrift Store and a $1,200 Legacy Regional Community Foundation grant for elementary schools and the Winfield Early Learning Center. The district also accepted $4,245 in teacher grants to fund various classroom projects, including a Winfield High School history exhibit, Winfield Middle School Playaway audiobooks and Irving Elementary and Winfield Early Learning Center science, technology, engineering and math materials.


Winfield High School JAG-K program celebrates back-to-back regional titles

WINFIELD, Kan. — Winfield High School Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas students were formally recognized Monday for securing first place at the Regional Career Development Conference at Cowley College on Feb. 24. The victory marks back-to-back regional championships for the program, which helps students build leadership and career skills. Students shared highlights of their recent activities with board members during the presentation.


Winfield High School athletic director named best in Class 4A

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Board of Education honored Winfield High School athletic director John Kaufman for being named the Class 4A Athletic Director of the Year. The Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association selected Kaufman for the award, recognizing his leadership and dedication to the district's athletic programs.
