District reports enrollment decline of 172 students
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The official Sept. 20 headcount for Unified School District 308 showed a decrease of 172 students from the previous year, bringing the total enrollment to 3,929. District administrators attributed the decline largely to lower birth rates across Reno County, noting an incoming kindergarten class of 242 students compared to an outgoing senior class of 357. While state funding formulas allow the district to use previous years' headcounts to stabilize the general budget, the drop will affect demographic weightings and prompt budget adjustments for the upcoming school year.
Kindergarten early reading readiness shows multi-year improvement
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fall screening data revealed that 51 percent of incoming Hutchinson kindergarteners entered the year "on level" for early reading skills, a significant improvement from 41 percent three years ago. Administrators credited the growth to recent investments in early childhood education, teacher retention and the Lil' Hawks Head Start program. However, officials noted a subsequent drop in proficiency as students transition to first grade, prompting a continued focus on summer retention programs and aligning curriculum expectations between grade levels.
Decision on high school schedule change delayed until early next year
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A decision on whether to shift from a semester to a trimester schedule at Hutchinson High School has been postponed until the spring. Superintendent Dr. Dawn M. Johnson, who recently announced she will retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year, recommended the delay to allow the USD 308 Board of Education and administration to focus on other pressing initiatives this semester, including the upcoming November bond election, the superintendent search and the construction manager selection process. Because of the delay, students will continue enrolling under the current semester structure for the next academic year.
District schedules town halls for $36 million bond issue
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ahead of the upcoming November election, the district will host four community meetings in October to detail what the district describes as a proposed $36 million zero-tax-increase bond issue. The funds would address infrastructure needs including roof replacements, HVAC upgrades, ADA-compliant bathroom renovations, security enhancements and expanded parking near Hutchinson Middle School 7. The informational meetings will be held on consecutive Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. throughout October, with the first two at HMS 7 and the final two at the Career & Technical Education Academy.
Board approves $132,000 security camera storage upgrade
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The district's aging security camera storage system will be replaced after the USD 308 Board of Education unanimously approved a $132,611 bid for a TrueNAS system. Director of Technology Jason Reed said the current system, installed in 2019, had reached its end of support and capacity, preventing the district from adding new cameras or running software updates. The new system is expected to meet the district's storage needs for the next five to eight years with no additional support costs.
Community and staff urged to participate in superintendent search surveys
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Following Superintendent Dr. Dawn M. Johnson's announcement that she will retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year, the USD 308 Board of Education is encouraging residents and district staff to complete surveys to help guide the search for Hutchinson's next superintendent. As of the meeting, 133 employee responses and 83 community responses had been submitted. ESSDACK will use the feedback to build a profile of desired leadership traits, and the online survey is available to the public via the district's website and at https://forms.gle/7nfZwYwtz64yTupx6. Search consultants are also conducting on-site focus groups at district buildings to gather additional input from educators.
