1. District recovers over $40,000 stolen in ACH fraud

LIBERAL, Kan. — The USD 480 Board of Education received an update regarding an Automated Clearing House fraud incident that targeted the district last August. Operations Director Chad Mease reported that the district's insurance provider issued a payment of $40,681.08, fully covering the financial loss incurred during the cyber theft.

2. District spends $115,000 on incident response services

LIBERAL, Kan. — Following a closed-door executive session to discuss the security of the district's information systems and facilities, the board approved an expenditure of $115,575 for incident response services from CFC Response. Public records do not definitively clarify whether the cybersecurity contract was initiated directly in response to the August ACH fraud incident or if it is part of a separate, broader security upgrade.

3. Board approves $233,000 exterior painting project

LIBERAL, Kan. — The board approved a major exterior waterproofing and painting project totaling $233,823 for exterior block walls at Sunflower Elementary, Bright Start Pre-K, McKinley, and the Liberal High School Redskin Field. The measure includes a $145,835 bid from IWP for labor and $87,988 for the purchase of necessary materials directly from Garland DBS through cooperative purchasing.

4. District explores Natatorium and field house renovations

LIBERAL, Kan. — The district is advancing athletic facility upgrades by awarding a $28,680 bid to Southwest Glass to replace walk-through doors and concession windows at the Redskin Field fieldhouse, while also continuing exploratory discussions for a new community natatorium. The proposed natatorium is a joint early-stage concept that would combine the efforts and resources of USD 480, the City of Liberal, and Seward County Community College.

5. Board reviews Prairie View Elementary dual language program

LIBERAL, Kan. — Superintendent Dane Richardson led a board discussion regarding the operations of the Prairie View Elementary dual language program and the Seymour Rogers Middle School High Reliability Schools action plan. The update followed the district's recent mandatory informational meetings, held earlier in April, for out-of-boundary parents interested in entering their children into the dual language kindergarten lottery for the upcoming school year.
