District finances remain on solid footing nearing year-end

HURON, S.D. — With the fiscal year 92 percent complete, the district's general fund remains in a strong position. The district has collected $25.1 million, or 87 percent of its budgeted revenue, while expending $23.5 million, or 82 percent of its budget. Business manager Kelly Christopherson noted the expenditure budget will catch up to nearly 100 percent in June when teacher contracts are fully expensed for the year.

School district saves nearly $90,000 on insurance premiums

HURON, S.D. — The Huron Board of Education received unexpected good financial news as business manager Kelly Christopherson reported an $89,000 decrease in the district's property and liability insurance premiums. The district had originally budgeted for an $80,000 increase, making the $684,457 renewal through the Associated School Boards of South Dakota Protective Trust a significant budgetary relief. The board unanimously approved the renewal, which designates roughly $450,000 for property insurance and $235,000 for liability.

Middle school gym floor replacement faces potential delay

HURON, S.D. — A planned replacement of the middle school gym floor may be pushed to the summer of 2027 due to a lack of available contractors. Business manager Kelly Christopherson informed the board that design plans are nearly complete and the project will be advertised soon, but potential bidders have indicated they are unavailable until at least September. The board will need to decide whether to proceed with construction during the school year or delay the installation, though current pricing could likely be locked in for future work.

High school roof project reaches completion

HURON, S.D. — The extensive roof replacement project at Huron High School is officially complete. District officials confirmed that all construction materials and equipment have been removed from the site. The board expects to issue the final payment for the project during its next meeting, concluding a major infrastructure upgrade for the district.

District bids farewell to long-tenured educators

HURON, S.D. — The board approved a slate of staff resignations as part of its consent agenda, marking the departure of several long-serving educators. Notable resignations include Kelly Hennrich, a high school teacher with 19 years of service who also served in multiple coaching and advising roles.

District reports significant drop in bullying incidents

HURON, S.D. — Bullying incidents within the school district have seen a notable decline, according to a report delivered by Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff. The district recorded 26 alleged and seven founded incidents during the most recent school year. This represents a steep decrease from the prior year's 51 alleged and 13 founded incidents, which Steinhoff attributed to the district's continued focus on bullying prevention and fostering a safe learning environment.

District to offer free summer meals for children

HURON, S.D. — The district will provide free grab-and-go meals for children ages 1 through 18 from May 29 to Aug. 7. Families can pick up the bags, which contain three breakfasts, three lunches and one snack, on Tuesdays and Fridays at Huron Middle School. Parents and guardians must sign up through the school nutrition office to participate.

Board officially certifies school board election results amid lackluster turnout

HURON, S.D. — The board officially accepted the county-canvassed election results, declaring Shelly Siemonsma the victor of a three-year term on the school board. Siemonsma defeated Sarah Meirose 1,019 to 758. Business manager Kelly Christopherson noted that despite a new state law combining the school election with the primary to boost voter participation, turnout was just 19 percent, with 1,804 of the 9,306 eligible voters casting ballots across Beadle, Sanborn and Jerauld counties.
