Dozens of Huron teachers to attend literacy conference
HURON, S.D. - Thirty-six staff members from the Huron School District will travel to Mitchell on June 16 and 17, 2026, to attend a regional literacy conference. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff announced that the district is providing daily bus transportation for the educators, who will spend the two days learning about the "science of reading" to help empower teachers and transform literacy instruction in local classrooms.
Public invited to tour new high school addition
HURON, S.D. - Community members will have the opportunity to explore the newly completed Huron High School addition during an open house on May 27, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff said the public is encouraged to park in the west parking lot and enter through the addition doors for a self-guided walkthrough of the new facility.
Free summer grab-and-go meals for children begin May 29
HURON, S.D. - The Huron School District will provide free grab-and-go meals for children ages 1 to 18 this summer. The program runs from May 29 through Aug. 7, 2026, with pickups scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays at Huron Middle School. District officials confirmed that the bag contents do not vary by pickup day; each bag will consistently contain three breakfasts, three lunches, and one snack. Families must sign up by contacting the school nutrition office.
Huron selected to host multiple state tournaments
HURON, S.D. - The Huron School District will be the site of several state-level athletic and academic competitions over the next three years, according to activities director Scott DeBoer. Huron is slated to host the SDHSAA State Debate Tournament on March 5 and 6, 2027. The following fall, in 2027, the district will host the SDHSAA State Soccer and Cross Country Championships in consecutive weeks, culminating with the SDHSAA State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament the following winter in 2028.
HRMC to provide free sports physicals for student-athletes
HURON, S.D. - Huron Regional Medical Center will partner with the school district to offer free sports physicals for student-athletes ahead of the upcoming fall season. Activities director Scott DeBoer announced the partnership during his year-in-review report to the board, noting that the physicals will be provided in conjunction with the district's "Back to Sports" night on July 29, 2026.
School board election scheduled for June 2
HURON, S.D. - Voters in the Huron School District will head to the polls on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, for the annual Huron School Board election. The confirmed June 2 date aligns with the state's scheduled primary election day. Candidates running for the at-large board seats include Sarah Meirose and Michelle L. Siemonsma.
