HURON, S.D. — The Board of Education unanimously approved a $66,000 addition to the “Let’s Go Learn” special education contract during its regular meeting Monday, April 27. Addressing a board member’s question during the consent agenda review, officials confirmed the expenditure revises an initially approved quote to cover additional program time. The entirety of the $66,000 addition will be funded through special education dollars.
District advances ‘Science of Reading’ grant initiatives
HURON, S.D. — The district’s literacy team is finalizing tasks for its Science of Reading grant and planning action steps for the 2026-27 academic year. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff reported that staff members are currently completing literacy blueprint courses, and the district will provide bus transportation for educators attending the South Dakota Literacy Conference in Mitchell in June.

HURON, S.D. — With the current school year winding down, the board highlighted key upcoming dates for the community. Community members are reminded that the next school board election will take place June 2.
Free summer grab-and-go meal program to run May 29 through Aug. 7
HURON, S.D. — The school district will offer free grab-and-go meals for children ages 1 to 18 throughout the summer, running from May 29 through Aug. 7. Parents can pick up bags containing three breakfasts, three lunches and one snack on Tuesdays and Fridays at Huron Middle School. Families interested in participating must sign up through the Huron School Nutrition Department.
District approves bus agreement for local summer camp
HURON, S.D. — The board approved an agreement allowing the Huron Parks and Recreation Department to use school district buses for its summer day camp from late May through early August. The parks department will provide proof of insurance and cover all driver fees and fuel costs for the designated twice-weekly outings, which will require a commitment of approximately three hours a week.
Delta Dental bus provides nearly $96,000 in free care to students
HURON, S.D. — The United Way-sponsored Delta Dental bus recently completed its second week in the district, providing substantial health care savings for local families. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff reported that the mobile clinic saw 50 students and completed $95,820 worth of free dental work.
Fifth annual business and career fair draws over 900 students
HURON, S.D. — The district recently hosted its fifth annual business and career fair, attracting 925 students from six regional school districts. The event featured 72 local vendors and was supported by the Greater Huron Development Corporation, alongside student volunteers from the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program.
Buchanan K-1 educator named Region 3 Teacher of the Year
HURON, S.D. — Buchanan K-1 educator Krissa Korkow has been named the South Dakota Region 3 Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff announced that Korkow is now one of five finalists under consideration for the statewide South Dakota Teacher of the Year award.
High school HOSA students excel at state conference
HURON, S.D. — Future Health Professionals (HOSA) students brought home multiple awards from the state conference in Sioux Falls. Junior Yaziely Sotomayor-Ramos took first place in World Health Disparities, while senior Brianna Cronin received the state Barbara James Service Award for completing 144 service hours and organizing two blood drives that collected 80 units of blood.
