Board approves construction manager for middle school gym floor in split vote
HURON, S.D. — The school board voted 4-1 to hire a construction firm as the construction manager at risk for the Huron Middle School gym floor replacement. The project, prompted by significant water damage from a roof leak last summer, was previously tabled but revived after school officials reported new heaving, buckling and tripping hazards. The firm will receive $1,100 for pre-construction services and 4 percent of the total project cost to manage bids and assume liability for subcontractors.
Architects hired to design middle school gym floor replacement
HURON, S.D. — Following the hiring of a construction manager, the school board unanimously approved a $25,440 contract with JLG Architects to draft blueprints for the Huron Middle School gym floor replacement. Huron School District Business Manager Kelly Christopherson noted the architectural services are required by South Dakota law because the project's estimated cost exceeds the state's $100,000 threshold. Initial estimates last summer priced the floor replacement at $230,000, though costs could rise if the underlying concrete requires repair.
High school roof installation reaches completion
HURON, S.D. — The final major phase of the Huron High School construction and renovation project is officially finished, with the new roof installation now complete. Huron School District Business Manager Kelly Christopherson informed the board that construction crews are currently cleaning up the site, and the district expects final inspections from the roof's manufacturer to occur this week.
School district under budget three quarters through fiscal year
HURON, S.D. — Huron School District Business Manager Kelly Christopherson reported the Huron School District is operating comfortably under budget 75 percent of the way through the fiscal year. To date, the district has collected $19.35 million in general fund revenue, or 67 percent of its budgeted amount, while expending $18.46 million, or 64 percent of budgeted expenditures. The current financial pacing remains highly consistent with the previous year's figures.
School board election forum set for May 9
HURON, S.D. — The Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau's Governmental Affairs Committee will host a school board election forum on May 9 at 9 a.m. at Huron City Hall. The June 2 election will feature a competitive race between an incumbent board member and a challenger. The forum aims to give voters an opportunity to hear from both candidates regarding district issues ahead of the summer election.
