HURON, S.D. - The board heard a report that the district will receive a 1.4 percent education funding increase following the completion of the South Dakota legislative session. Blind student showcases Braille technology to school board

HURON, S.D. - A third-grade student and a paraeducator demonstrated a new Braille notetaker tablet that allows visually impaired students to participate in general education classrooms. The roughly $4,300 device, operating on an Android system, features a refreshable Braille display and converts the student's typing into print in real time for teachers. After the student read an original story and shared a joke with the board, a board member delivered an emotional statement commending the student's resilience. The board member used the moment to challenge local students to make the most of their educational opportunities, asking what excuses anyone could have when faced with the student's determination.


English Learner department relocates to district elementary center

HURON, S.D. - The Huron School District's English Learner department has moved its operations from the district arena to an elementary center. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff announced the relocation, noting the new space includes a conference room intended to welcome new families into the district. The department's phone number will remain unchanged despite the move.


Regional students tour Huron's Career and Technical Education programs

HURON, S.D. - Students from the Hitchcock-Tulare, Wolsey-Wessington and Sanborn Central school districts toured Huron's Career and Technical Education facilities to prepare for their 2026-2027 class schedules. Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff said visiting superintendents reported positive feedback from students about Huron's programming, facilities and the high school Career and Technical Student Organization student guides who led the March 11 tours.


Board celebrates State AA Boys Basketball Champions

HURON, S.D. - Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff recognized the Huron boys basketball team for winning the State AA Boys Basketball Championship in Rapid City. Head coach Tim Buddenhagen, along with assistant coaches and student-athletes, were honored during the superintendent's celebrations report. Steinhoff also commended players Blake Ellwein and Myles Ellwein for their selection to the tournament's all-tournament team.


Transportation employee named classified employee of the month

HURON, S.D. - A route driver for the district's transportation department was recognized as the classified employee of the month. District officials praised the employee's punctuality, positive attitude and willingness to cover out-of-town activity routes on short notice.


National Honor Society highlights community service and upcoming induction

HURON, S.D. - Seniors from the Huron High School National Honor Society presented their annual report to the board, describing the group's focus on scholarship, leadership, character and service. The student president said juniors with a 3.7 grade point average or higher are applying for membership. The chapter, which volunteers at the public library and local elementary schools, will hold its induction ceremony for new members on May 4.


Board approves arena parking lot for traveling exhibit

HURON, S.D. - The board unanimously approved a request from the Huron Public Library to host a traveling bus exhibit in the district arena parking lot May 4-8. Assistant library director Glenda Maxted told the board the library's parking lot could not support the exhibit vehicle's weight. The free traveling exhibit, billed as part of a nationwide initiative tied to the United States' upcoming 250th anniversary, will operate self-sufficiently using its own generators.
