Board votes 6-1 to close Logan Avenue Elementary School

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Emporia Board of Education voted 6-1 to close Logan Avenue Elementary School at the end of the 2026-27 school year. Citing declining enrollment and a need to align district expenditures with revenues, officials said the closure is expected to save taxpayers about $1.4 million. Students residing north of South Avenue will be reassigned to William Allen White Elementary School, while those to the south will attend Riverside Elementary School. Board members expressed remorse over the decision, praising the school's staff and community, but said fiscal realities forced the move.

Transfer capacities capped following Logan closure

EMPORIA, Kan. — Following the decision to close Logan Avenue Elementary School, the Emporia Board of Education unanimously approved new class-size capacities to guide student transfer requests. The approved plan, designated as Option 1, restricts new transfers into Riverside Elementary School and William Allen White Elementary School to preserve space for reassigned Logan Avenue Elementary students. Superintendent David McGehee said families living within those attendance boundaries will not be forced to transfer, and the district plans to manage neighborhood enrollment growth through staffing adjustments and classroom aides.

District prepares educators for 2028 state literacy mandate

EMPORIA, Kan. — To meet a Kansas mandate requiring certain educators to hold a literacy seal on their teaching licenses by July 1, 2028, the district is rolling out Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling training. District instructional leaders said the training emphasizes the "science of reading," including explicit phonics and word recognition strategies, and is intended to strengthen early literacy outcomes.
