District implements signage to comply with new 'bathroom bill'

EMPORIA, Kan. - In response to Senate Bill 244, which regulates restroom usage based on biological sex and takes effect immediately, Superintendent Dr. David McGehee informed the Emporia Board of Education that the district has placed signage in schools to comply with the statute. McGehee stated that while the district must follow the law to avoid complaints to the attorney general, the administration aims to continue supporting all students and ensuring they feel safe. Two board members expressed concern regarding the law's impact on the transgender community, with one apologizing to transgender individuals and stating the law does not reflect her values as a board member.

Rec center steering committee proposes scaled-down project

EMPORIA, Kan. - Board member Jami Reever announced that the Emporia Recreation Steering Committee is moving forward with a revised, scaled-down plan for a new recreation center that cuts the projected cost in half. Reever, who serves as the school board representative on the committee, reported the new proposal includes a new build and upgrades to the Lee Beran Recreation Center, funded by a potential quarter-cent sales tax to be placed on the November 2026 ballot. The committee is reconsidering the location, potentially moving from Champions Landing to the Jones Aquatic Center site to avoid land purchase costs.

Suspension numbers drop significantly across district

EMPORIA, Kan. - District administrators presented strategic plan data showing a sharp decrease in student suspensions compared to the previous school year. Director of Assessment and Accountability Dr. Ryan Karjala reported that elementary in-school suspensions dropped from 103 last year to 33 so far this year, while middle school out-of-school suspensions fell from 109 to 77. Administrators attributed the decline to consistent handbook enforcement, proactive behavioral interventions and clear expectations set by building leadership.

Kindergarten welcome tours set for March

EMPORIA, Kan. - The district announced that the "Class of 2039" Kindergarten Welcome Tours will take place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 6 p.m. All elementary schools will open their doors to incoming kindergarten families to tour facilities, visit classrooms and meet staff. The event is designed to help families and students establish connections prior to the start of the new school year.
