Sheriff announces resignation effective May 31

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Sheriff John Grossnickle announced his intent to vacate his position effective May 31, concluding a 30-year career in law enforcement. Grossnickle thanked his family, county staff and the commission, praising the strong working relationship his department shared with the board. Commissioners commended his forward-thinking leadership and flat budget management over the past four years. The board will officially declare the vacancy and initiate the replacement process at its June 2 meeting.

Sheriff dispels rumors, highlights ICE contract revenue

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Addressing local rumors that the county is not receiving funds for housing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees, Sheriff John Grossnickle presented financial data showing the contracts will generate well over $1 million for the county this fiscal year. Grossnickle reported the county has already received $167,500 in stipends for transport, equipment and IT support, alongside nearly $370,600 in inmate housing revenue since October.

Commission approves sale of county properties following executive session

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Upon returning from an executive session, the Sweetwater County Commission approved the sale of unspecified county properties at market value and authorized Chairman Keaton West to sign corresponding documents. The motion passed 3-0, with Commissioner Taylor Jones abstaining from the vote.

Winton Road properties rezoned for indoor horse arena

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — The commission unanimously approved a zoning map amendment to change approximately 680 acres north of Rock Springs from single-family residential to agriculture. The rezoning affects a 40-acre parcel at 237 Winton Road and an adjacent 640-acre parcel owned by the Bureau of Land Management. The change will allow the property owner, Donna Binning, a horse breeder, to construct an indoor riding arena.

Commission dissolves Community Fine Arts Center Board

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — The commission unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding to dissolve the Community Fine Arts Center Board, following similar actions by the city of Rock Springs and Sweetwater County School District No. 1. Commissioner Mary Thoman clarified that the center itself is not closing. The board is being dissolved because it failed to update its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2016, and the county library system will now set up a special committee to oversee the center's operations.

County approves $9.5 million state contract for Southwest Counseling Service

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — The commission approved a $9.5 million primary state funding contract for Southwest Counseling Service for the upcoming fiscal year, which includes roughly $1.19 million in pass-through funds for residential beds in Uinta County. Interim Director Melissa Wray-Marchetti noted that recent state legislative changes to a fee-for-service model have negatively impacted the agency's cash flow, but quarterly true-up payments will ensure the agency is made whole by the end of the contract term.

Commission awards 2026–2027 University of Wyoming scholarships

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Following an executive session, the commission awarded its annual Sweetwater County Commissioner Scholarships to three local students. The scholarships provide financial assistance for students continuing their education at the University of Wyoming or an in-state community college. Three alternates were also selected, chosen from a pool of 14 applicants.
