County awards $2.2 million contract for library HVAC system amid budget shortfall

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — A $2,221,450 contract was awarded to Vaughn's Plumbing and Heating for the White Mountain Library heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrade, despite the project coming in over budget. Public works director Gene Legerski noted the county received only one bid for the project, which requires semi-custom units due to existing building constraints that prevent standard off-the-rack units from fitting through the facility's doors. The contract was approved with Chairman Keaton West abstaining due to his employment with Vaughn's Plumbing and Heating. To address the funding gap, a committee consisting of commissioners Mary Thoman and Robb Slaughter was formed to work with public works and library staff to identify potential capital project deferments — such as playground equipment or a chiller replacement — to cover the remaining costs.

County approves over $300,000 in fleet vehicle purchases

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Six vehicle bids totaling over $300,000 were approved to update fleets across multiple departments. The approved purchases include a Dodge Durango Pursuit and two Ford F-150s for the Sheriff's Office, a Ford F-150 for the Purchasing Department and a Chrysler Pacifica minivan for the library system. Additionally, the purchase of a 2027 Ram 5500 cab and chassis for $73,331 was approved for the Sweetwater County Fire Department, which will be retrofitted with the pumping apparatus from an older fire truck to save taxpayer dollars.

Commissioners approve 2 percent cost-of-living raise for county employees

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — County employees will receive a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment effective Oct. 1 following approval. Human resources director Gary McLean presented the resolution, which also extends the raise to employees of the Sweetwater County Library and the Sweetwater County Historical Museum. The adjustment was made with a conservative approach to personnel spending due to impending budget constraints and a need for future departmental efficiencies, as personnel costs currently account for roughly 80 percent of the county budget.

County updates health benefits, explores options for weight-loss drugs

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Updates to the county employee health plan were approved, adding a new hearing aid benefit that covers up to $1,000 per ear every three years and shifting voluntary accident and critical illness coverage to United Medical Resources (UMR). However, a lengthy debate ensued regarding coverage for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) weight-loss drugs. Human resources director Gary McLean noted the exorbitant costs charged by pharmacy benefit managers and suggested exploring alternative sourcing, such as importing the medications from Canada for roughly $200 per month or utilizing a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). Staff will develop a comprehensive plan for GLP-1 coverage ahead of the next enrollment period, aiming to balance employee health needs with the plan's financial viability.

Commissioners grant Christmas Eve as paid holiday for county staff

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — County employees will receive an additional paid holiday this year, with county offices scheduled to close on Thursday, Dec. 24 for Christmas Eve. Human resources specialist Alyx Moneyhun noted that foot traffic in county buildings is historically minimal on the day before Christmas. Essential law enforcement personnel who are scheduled to work on Christmas Eve will be granted a floating holiday to use before the end of the fiscal year, preventing additional overtime costs. New Year's Eve will remain a regular working day due to high public demand for end-of-month services like tax payments and vehicle registrations.

Declining water levels threaten Flaming Gorge boat ramps

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Dropping water levels at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir are leaving local boat ramps high and dry. By early next year, only two functioning boat ramps — Buckboard and Upper Marsh Creek — are expected to remain open on the Wyoming side of the reservoir, as Anvil Draw is already closed and Firehole is slated to close soon. The U.S. Forest Service currently lacks the funding to extend the closed ramps and was recently denied a grant from the state's Recreation Trust Fund. U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman's office has launched a congressional inquiry into the issue after local officials advocated for extending the concrete ramps while the water levels are naturally receded.

Private landowner blocks public access through the ranch

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Public access to federal lands through Red Creek Ranch in eastern Sweetwater County has been cut off. After meeting with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and state trails officials, the county discovered that neither agency possesses any historical right-of-way documents for the century-old road segment passing through the private property. Local officials are now investigating expedited options to construct a bypass road to restore public access to the surrounding public lands.

Events complex generates nearly $10 million in summer economic impact

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Sweetwater Events Complex executive director Kandi Pendleton reported that the facility generated nearly $10 million in summer economic impact.

Commissioners urge open-mindedness on future data center developments

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo. — Future data center developments were discussed, emphasizing an open-minded approach to potential projects in the county.
