County officials clash over proposed procurement policy
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - Department heads pushed back against a proposed county procurement policy, arguing that stricter bidding requirements would cost taxpayers more money and hinder daily operations. The proposed rules would require bids for purchases over $7,500 and sealed bids for those over $35,000, while limiting external vehicle maintenance. County officials, including road and bridge director Billy Pape, expressed concerns that the policy would cause significant delays and added expenses, particularly for specialized equipment repairs and high-volume purchases like fuel and tires. Commissioners ultimately tabled the policy for two weeks to collaborate with department heads on a more workable solution.
Commissioners scrutinize jail maintenance and training expenditures
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - Recent expenditures by the Sublette County Sheriff's Office drew sharp criticism during a review of accounts payable, specifically a $119,000 bill for painting and sandblasting jail pods. Commissioners questioned why the county's own maintenance department could not perform the work, arguing that the external labor costs were exorbitant. Additionally, the board demanded explanations for a $2,400 training program and discrepancies in radio equipment costs. The commission approved the current payable accounts but requested the sheriff's office appear at the next meeting to justify the expenses.
Sublette County Chamber of Commerce seeks funding, defends sales tax petition
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - The Sublette County Chamber of Commerce presented a request for $7,000 to fund the "Pathways" high school internship program and the "Jumpstart" adult entrepreneurship class, aiming to retain local workforce talent. Chamber representatives also addressed public pushback regarding their ongoing petition for a proposed temporary local-option sales tax increase. The chamber clarified that the proposed temporary tax increase is a state requirement to secure industrial impact funding tied to the proposed Dry Piney Helium project, assuring residents that the tax would sunset after four years.
$1.1 million fairgrounds shade structure project moves forward
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - Following weeks of budget scrutiny, the commission unanimously approved a $1,126,118 contract with Teletractors Inc. for the construction of a new shade structure at the Sublette County Fairgrounds. The approval comes after commissioners previously demanded a clearer breakdown of engineering and construction costs to ensure the project remained financially transparent. The final cost includes an $85,000 adjusted engineering fee and a $25,000 contingency fund for additional concrete supports.
Commission weighs canceling Pocket Creek Road realignment project
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - The planned Pocket Creek Road realignment project may be scrapped after commissioners questioned its necessity. During the meeting's closing discussions, commissioners noted that recent brush clearing and willow removal have already alleviated visibility and safety issues on the roadway, which sees minimal traffic during the winter. Citing the high costs of road construction and a desire to redirect funds to more pressing infrastructure needs, the board plans to officially discuss canceling the project at its next meeting.
MESA Therapeutic Horsemanship granted county land and infrastructure support
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - The commission approved a request from MESA Therapeutic Horsemanship (MESA) to utilize a portion of a county-owned parcel near the local 4-H facilities for a permanent riding facility. MESA, which provides equine-assisted services for individuals with disabilities, also requested infrastructure assistance. After a debate over the appropriateness of dedicating county resources to a specific nonprofit over broader public use, commissioners agreed to provide road base, a water well and power installation. Supporters emphasized the program's unique value to vulnerable populations who cannot participate in traditional county recreation programs.
Commissioners approve $110,000 modular trailer for IT department
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - The county's Information Technology (IT) department will soon operate out of a modular trailer after commissioners approved a $110,000 budget cap for the temporary facility. The decision followed months of debate over a lack of available office and storage space for a newly hired IT staff member, who is currently operating out of a cramped room without adequate space to service county hardware. While some commissioners expressed reservations about the aesthetics, snow removal logistics and hidden plumbing costs of setting up a trailer, the board ultimately approved the measure as a necessary temporary fix.
Commission upholds termination of Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course restaurant lease
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - Despite a plea from the current operators, the board of county commissioners stood by its previous decision to terminate the lease for the Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course restaurant. The restaurant's operators cited a lack of communication regarding customer complaints and offered to shorten their lease to March 2027 while adjusting their menu to better serve golfers. However, the board cited reported ongoing issues with tournament catering, high prices and overall golfer dissatisfaction. The commission took no action to reverse the termination, leaving the eviction process in place.
Sublette County Public Health deploys AEDs and trauma kits in public buildings
SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo. - Sublette County Public Health announced the successful installation of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and advanced first aid cabinets in 12 county buildings, including the courthouse, libraries and senior centers. The trauma kits contain life-saving equipment, including Narcan for opioid overdoses and anti-choking suction devices. To accompany the rollout, 30 county employees received training in first aid and life-saving basics, and public education efforts are underway to encourage bystanders to use the devices under state Good Samaritan laws.
