Sterling Defeats Moundridge 27-15 in Physical Battle

The Moundridge Wildcats dropped a hard-fought 27-15 decision to Sterling Friday night, falling victim to turnovers and an inability to maintain early momentum in a physical contest.
Moundridge opened the scoring in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead, but Sterling responded with 14 points to claim a 14-7 advantage after one period. The Black Bears extended their lead with six second-quarter points and added seven more in the third quarter to build a commanding 27-7 lead before the Wildcats managed eight fourth-quarter points.
Quarterback K. Kanitz shouldered the offensive load for Moundridge, completing 12 of 21 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown while also leading the ground attack with 16 carries for 106 yards and a rushing touchdown. However, three interceptions proved costly for the Wildcats' passing game.
F. Burge provided the biggest receiving threat with a 65-yard catch, while L. Greenwalt contributed five receptions for 11 yards and added 31 rushing yards on five carries. The Wildcats managed 250 total yards of offense, with 137 coming on the ground.
Defensively, Kanitz led Moundridge with 12 tackles, while P. Grill and H. Churchill each recorded 10 tackles. The defense forced no turnovers while Sterling's offense controlled the line of scrimmage throughout much of the contest.
"It was a tough game! It came down to the team with the fewer mistakes and the team that was able to control the line of scrimmage," said Moundridge head coach. "We battled but fell short. We will put a better team on the field next week."
The loss drops Moundridge to 1-1 on the season, while Sterling improves to 2-0. The Wildcats will look to regroup as they prepare for next week's contest.
