MCPHERSON, Kan. — Recent spring flooding has cost McPherson County approximately $150,000 in unbudgeted repair costs, a financial hit that will delay several planned infrastructure projects.

Public Works Director Dave Bohnenblust told commissioners the unexpected expenses to repair washed-out rural bridges will be covered by the department's capital outlay fund. Diverting those funds means up to three planned bridge replacement projects scheduled for this year will likely be postponed.

To address one of the immediate washouts, the commission approved a $58,459.56 purchase of reinforced concrete boxes and materials from McPherson Concrete. The vote was unanimous. The materials will be used to replace a destroyed bridge on Pueblo Road, just east of 23rd Road. Construction is expected to begin in approximately 90 days, once the concrete is manufactured.
