Special Olympics basketball, cheer championships returning to Hays in 2027

HAYS, Kan. — Special Olympics Kansas will bring its state basketball and cheerleading championships back to Hays for the first time in a decade, drawing an estimated 1,200 athletes and 200 coaches to the city in spring 2027. The tournament, scheduled for March 18-20, 2027, will use 12 local gymnasiums — including facilities at Fort Hays State University and Hays High School — to host team play, individual skills challenges and cheer competitions. Visit Hays officials welcomed the event's return this week, noting it will also feature opening ceremonies, an athletes' banquet and a dance.
