HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Sons of the Plains Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will commemorate the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary July 4 by dedicating a new Liberty Tree during a day of patriotic festivities. Following a 1.2-mile downtown parade in which the group will march behind the American Legion, community members will gather at the Hutchinson YMCA for the afternoon dedication of a Princeton American elm to be planted by Scott's Landscaping. Kansas Society SAR President Tim Peterman will lead the 2 p.m. ceremony, unveiling a commemorative granite stone to be placed at the base of the tree to honor the nation's founders and educate future generations about the American Revolution.

Before the tree dedication, the chapter will hold a 1:50 p.m. bell-ringing ceremony tolling for the 13 original colonies and will host a raffle drawing for a Browning 12-gauge shotgun, highlighting the group's partnership with GUNBROS. Hutchinson Mayor Scott Meggers will join SAR Chapter Vice President David Parks, Chapter President Bit Roberts and members of the Uvedale Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for the afternoon events, which will also feature a color guard presentation and local Scout troops leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
