Sheriff's office to get $346,000 camera upgrade alongside major public records redaction project

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County sheriff's deputies will soon be equipped with new body-worn and in-car cameras after commissioners unanimously approved a $346,396.01 contract at a recent meeting, part of a broader push to modernize county technology and improve transparency.

The contract will supply the Reno County Sheriff's Office with 23 in-car cameras, 43 body cameras and unlimited cloud data storage for an updated evidence management system.

In a separate unanimous vote aimed at protecting resident privacy, the commission approved a $60,000 contract with Fidlar Technologies to redact personally identifiable information from county property deeds. The software will scan approximately 500,000 pages of public records to obscure sensitive data such as Social Security numbers.

The redaction project will allow title companies and residents to safely view records online through a subscription service. Details on subscription costs and any changes to current public access to the records were not immediately available.

County officials said the $60,000 cost will be covered entirely by the Register of Deeds office's technology fund, which is supported through recording fees, rather than the county's general fund.
