SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — The Seward County Commission declined to take action on an engineering services agreement with Kirkham Michael regarding a road use and maintenance plan for the proposed Thresher Wind project. Earlier in the meeting, a citizen spoke during public comment urging the commission to reject the wind farm's conditional use permit, citing health, environmental and road-damage concerns. When the engineering agreement was introduced later in the agenda, it died for lack of a motion. An engineer noted the county would likely owe the firm between $15,000 and $20,000 for background work already completed if the wind project ultimately fails to move forward.
Long-awaited bridge replacement secures funding
SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — Progress is being made on the replacement of the Massoni Bridge, a local infrastructure effort decades in the making. State officials recently announced a $2.37 million funding allocation for the project, and the county is currently exploring funding options with the Kansas Department of Transportation for its required $540,000 local match. County Administrator April D. Warden credited former Commissioner Scott Carr for his relentless efforts to champion the bridge replacement, noting that updated plans will soon be submitted to the railroad for review.
County agrees to maintain subdivision roads after construction
SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — Homeowners in a platted but undeveloped local subdivision will soon be allowed to build on their properties following a road maintenance agreement. The commission unanimously agreed to assume long-term maintenance of the subdivision's roads, but only after the developers or property owners construct the roads to meet official county specifications. Previously, the county could not issue building permits in the area because the dirt pathways were not constructed to standard and were not designated as public roads.
Fairgrounds beer garden expansion tabled for resolution rewrite
SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — A request from the fair board to expand the boundaries of the beverage garden for the upcoming Seward County Five State Fair has been tabled until July 20. Organizers had hoped to allow attendees to consume beverages in a larger, enclosed dirt area between the grandstands and the poultry barn while enjoying free entertainment. However, legal counsel advised that the commission should formally draft a new resolution or waiver to safely supersede a 2011 rule that strictly restricts alcohol consumption on county property.
County rodeo granted alcohol license ahead of August event
SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — The commission unanimously approved a temporary cereal malt beverage license for the Seward County PRCA Rodeo, scheduled to take place Aug. 12–16. Organizers reported record-breaking attendance at last year's event, filling the county's 1,400 newly installed bleacher seats to standing-room-only capacity. This year's rodeo will feature a military salute to coincide with the nation's 250th anniversary year, as well as a new daytime semi-truck show held in conjunction with Seward County Community College's truck driving school.
Sheriff's department receives grant for bulletproof vests
SEWARD COUNTY, Kan. — The Seward County Sheriff's Department will be outfitted with new protective equipment thanks to a grant from the Cooper Clark Foundation. The commission unanimously approved the acceptance of the $23,746 award. The funds will be used strictly to purchase new bulletproof vests for local law enforcement officers, representing a direct safety upgrade at no additional cost to taxpayers.
