Senate Appropriations Committee Passes Sen. Moran’s FY2026 Commerce, Justice, & Science Appropriations Bill

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) – today released the following statement after the Senate Committee on Appropriations approved the FY2026 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Act:
“This legislation strengthens the programs that are important to Kansas – support for local law enforcement to combat violent crime and disrupt fentanyl trafficking, investments to bolster economic growth, and resources to provide critical 24/7 weather coverage – while also taking steps to make targeted reductions in spending. I appreciate the support from my colleagues to fund critical programs that strengthen our nation’s federal law enforcement, invest in NASA’s Artemis program, support scientific research, and improve our economic competitiveness.”
Items to Note:
- Department of Justice – $36.9 billion to fight violent crime and drug trafficking networks, counter foreign threats, and bolster local law enforcement capabilities.
- Federal Judiciary Security – Includes additional funding for safety and security of federal judiciary officials, including the protection of Supreme Court justices.
- Defense Capabilities – Includes $6.6 billion for defense functions, including the FBI’s national security and counterintelligence missions.
- Local Law Enforcement – $569 million for grants that support police and sheriff departments.
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – $2.6 billion to dismantle the cartels that are flooding the U.S. with fentanyl.
- Department of Commerce – $10.9 billion for investments that strengthen our economy, including trade promotion and enforcement, weather forecasting, oceanic and atmospheric monitoring, scientific and technical research, broadband deployment, and the protection of intellectual property.
- National Weather Service (NWS) – Fully funds the life-saving functions of the NWS and 24/7 staffing at Weather Forecast Offices nationwide.
- Space Exploration – $24.9 billion for NASA for space exploration and flagship programs such as the Artemis campaign, human spaceflight, and maintaining launch services like SLS and Orion.
- National Science Foundation – $9 billion to continue essential research, and prioritizes emerging technologies, including advanced manufacturing, AI and quantum science.
