1. County board tables rural fireworks ban

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Despite extreme drought conditions and recommendations from area fire officials, the Scotts Bluff County Board of Commissioners tabled a resolution that would have banned fireworks outside incorporated areas. Commissioners cited varying viewpoints, with some expressing concerns over government overreach, enforceability, and the protection of citizens' rights, while others argued that the severe, unprecedented dry spell and stretched firefighting resources necessitated a temporary halt on rural fireworks to prevent catastrophic wildfires.

2. Property valuation protests underway amid mail delays

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Scotts Bluff County Assessor Robert Simpson reported that 60 property valuation protests have been filed so far, with 42 hearings already scheduled for late June and July. Simpson noted that some residents have experienced delays in receiving their valuation change notices in the mail due to postal service slowdowns. He advised taxpayers who suspect a change in their property's assessed value to check their valuations online or contact the Scotts Bluff County Assessor's Office directly to review their files before the June 30 protest deadline.

3. Board approves late vehicle tax exemptions for veterans

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — The commissioners approved two motor vehicle tax exemption waivers for local veterans who missed the 30-day application deadline because they were unaware of the state benefit. Acknowledging that only a small fraction of the county's roughly 2,500 eligible veterans have applied for the tax relief, the board discussed plans to work collaboratively with Scotts Bluff County Veteran Service Officer Matthew Meyers to increase public awareness and improve signage so more veterans can take advantage of the exemption.

4. Marriage license fees set to double in July

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Scotts Bluff County Clerk Kelly Sides announced that the cost of a marriage license will double from $25 to $50 starting July 18, following recent statewide legislative changes. The cost of obtaining a certified copy of a marriage license will also increase from $9 to $16. The fee hike comes after a successful push by Nebraska counties to align local charges with state-level fees, which had remained stagnant and capped for several years.
