Planning commission approves relocation of Kaw Valley Greenhouses

SALINA, Kan. — The planning commission unanimously approved a special use permit for Kaw Valley Greenhouses to relocate its seasonal open-air market within the Southview Plaza parking lot. The market, which has operated at the site since 2014, was required to move from the northeast corner to the center of the lot after it was discovered the previous location conflicted with Harbor Freight Tools' lease. The market will operate under 11 city conditions, including an annual shutdown date of June 15 to ensure the lot is cleared before consumer fireworks stands are permitted to open on June 27.

Construction underway on West Magnolia and Virginia Drive roundabout

SALINA, Kan. — A roundabout at West Magnolia and Virginia Drive is currently under construction, marking the first phase of the West Magnolia Corridor project. Public works director Ron Marsh said the project will cost between $4 million and $4.5 million, slightly higher than anticipated due to an aggressive construction timeline. The intersection will remain open through five or six phases of construction, with substantial completion expected by the end of November.

K-State to fund new leg of Centennial and Magnolia roundabout

SALINA, Kan. — Kansas State University will fund a fourth leg of a planned roundabout at Centennial Road and West Magnolia Road to create a new entrance for the campus. The roundabout is part of the $8 million phases 2 and 3 of the West Magnolia Road project. To avoid delays and increased costs associated with railroad property, the city plans to taper traffic down to a two-lane road rather than expanding it near the existing railroad tracks.

City designs industrial roundabout for Ninth Street and Water Well Road

SALINA, Kan. — A new roundabout designed to accommodate large semi-truck traffic is under design for Ninth Street and Water Well Road. The project is expected to cost between $4 million and $4.5 million. Because the roundabout is located in an industrial area, public works director Ron Marsh said the city plans to bring a variance request to the planning commission to bypass standard curb, gutter and sidewalk requirements.

East Magnolia Road slated for $8 million bridge replacement

SALINA, Kan. — An outdated and narrow bridge on East Magnolia Road, located just west of the Salina Soccer Complex, is scheduled for a complete replacement. The $7.5 million to $8 million project is designed to safely accommodate increased traffic from nearby residential development. The new bridge will feature a 10-foot utility path on the north side and a pedestrian-activated flashing light to allow safe crossings to a nearby levee.

Temporary four-way stop considered for Ohio Street and Schilling Road

SALINA, Kan. — The city is awaiting a traffic study to determine the future of the Ohio Street and Schilling Road intersection, with final recommendations expected by May 11. While preliminary designs anticipate a $2.3 million improvement project slated for construction in early 2027, engineers are studying whether a temporary four-way stop should be installed in the interim to manage rush-hour congestion near office buildings.

Grant to fund traffic signal coordination on Ninth Street

SALINA, Kan. — Drivers traveling on Ninth Street may soon encounter fewer red lights. The city has secured a grant to implement signal coordination along the corridor this year. By syncing the timing of the lights, the public works department aims to improve north-and-south traffic flow and allow motorists traveling at the speed limit to navigate the street with fewer stops.

North Ohio overpass scheduled for summer painting

SALINA, Kan. — The city plans to paint the North Ohio overpass this summer as part of its seasonal public works maintenance schedule. Public works director Ron Marsh warned the commission that the logistical aspects of the painting project will be a "challenge," but the department is aiming to have the work completed before the end of the current construction season.
