New commissioner welcomed to Saline County commission

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — The Saline County Board of Commissioners officially welcomed new commissioner Tom Arpke at its latest meeting. Arpke was selected by the Saline County Republican Party Central Committee convention to fill the unexpired District 1 term after former commissioner Monte Shadwick officially resigned on April 20 to focus on personal goals and travel. Arpke, who previously served as a Salina city commissioner and Kansas state senator, was sworn into office on May 28. The meeting marked Arpke's first session as the board's newest member.

County interviews candidates for community engagement coordinator

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — The county is moving forward with filling its newly reconfigured community engagement coordinator position, previously known as the public information officer. Five candidates, including two internal applicants, were scheduled for interviews following the meeting. The updated role will focus heavily on grant writing and community engagement to secure additional project funds for Saline County.

Board finalizes disorganization of Washington Township

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners voted 4-0 to adopt a resolution finalizing the disorganization of Washington Township and formally attaching its territory to Smolan Township. The board previously held a public hearing on May 19 and confirmed with County Clerk Jamie Doss that no petitions objecting to the merger were filed by electors within the required 30-day publication period.

Social services funding requests jump 40 percent for upcoming budget

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — Ten organizations, including two new applicants, have submitted proposals requesting a total of $391,000 in social services funding from the county. The requests represent a 40 percent increase over last year's allocation amount. A county social services committee will review the applications and make formal recommendations to the commission during the upcoming budget process.

Commissioners approve $70,000 in change orders for Senior Services project

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — The board unanimously approved nearly $70,000 in change orders with Harbin Construction for a parking lot and roof project at Senior Services. The changes include flagpole relocation and city-mandated landscaping. County officials noted the landscaping additions were a later requirement not part of the original scope of the Community Development Block Grant funding the project. However, because the original bids came in under budget, the granting agency agreed to cover the additions, keeping the change orders 100 percent grant-funded.

County brokers discussions on future of library services

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. — Discussions regarding the Central Kansas Library System and the Salina Public Library are ongoing, with a joint meeting between the Gypsum Community Library board and the Salina Public Library scheduled for July 8. County officials are exploring whether Salina can provide services potentially reallocated from the regional system, aiming to lower taxpayer costs while ensuring adequate library resources remain available for the city of Gypsum.
