Board approves variance and density reduction for former sheriff's property
SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a 5.6-foot side-yard setback variance Thursday for a multifamily home at 615 Oakdale Drive, where ongoing renovations will also scale back the number of units. The variance, which reduces the standard 10-foot minimum setback to 4.4 feet from the east property line, allows property owner Lloyds of Kansas LLC to rebuild an exterior staircase to meet current building codes. City staff noted the 1900-built home required a 6-foot top landing to safely accommodate an outward-swinging door. Applicant Bevin Welsch, representing the ownership group, told the board the company purchased the historic property last October from the estate of the late Saline County Sheriff Darrell Wilson. While the home previously housed up to six living spaces, the new owners have capped occupancy at four units and plan to convert an unused second-floor space into a communal laundry facility for tenants.
Vice chair resigns from Board of Zoning Appeals
SALINA, Kan. — Vice Chair Mike Trow has resigned from the Salina Board of Zoning Appeals, city staff announced Thursday. Trow officially stepped down last week, leaving a vacancy on both the board and in its leadership structure. Staff and board members briefly acknowledged the departure during the meeting, noting that his service to the city will be missed.
