Board approves parking variance for new Panda Express

SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a parking variance Thursday for a proposed Panda Express fast-casual restaurant at 2755 S. Ninth St. The variance allows the restaurant, to be located on Lot 4, Block 1, Replat of Nine South Addition on the east side of Market Place, to construct 56 off-street parking spaces. Current zoning regulations cap the location at 31 spaces, but the board agreed to an 80% maximum parking increase after reviewing data showing an unusually high need for parking capacity. While Panda Restaurant Group data indicated regional stores generally require up to 60 spaces due to a 70% dine-in to 30% drive-thru ratio and up to 13 employees at shift overlap, the applicant, represented by Henry Klover of H.C. Klover Architect, formally requested and was granted 56 spaces to match the proposed site plan. The proposed Salina location is expected to exceed Panda Express' national sales average by 10% to 15%, according to analytics included in the city staff report. (salina-ks.gov)
