SALINA, Kan. — Young volunteers at Theatre Salina are turning their summer break into a hands-on educational experience, learning geometry, creative problem-solving and sewing to build costumes for the upcoming July production of "Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr."

Executive Director Michael Spicer, who has described community theater as the grassroots of the entertainment industry, said collaborative shop work guided by the production's costume designer demonstrates that the arts offer real-world value far beyond the stage.
