Salina South Upsets Liberal to Reach Sectionals
Cougars set up cross-town showdown with Salina Central after stunning playoff run
SALINA, Kan. — The 14th-seeded Salina South Cougars continued their improbable playoff run Friday night, defeating sixth-seeded Liberal 22-16 to claim the Regional Championship and advance to next week's Sectional round. The victory marks the second consecutive upset for Salina South, which entered the 5A playoffs with just one regular season win but has now eliminated third-seeded Andover and Liberal in back-to-back weeks to earn Regional Champions honors. The Cougars' stunning postseason surge sets up a highly anticipated Sectional matchup against cross-town rival Salina Central, creating a winner-take-all battle for a trip to the Final Four between the two Salina schools, with Central having won their regular season meeting 31-21 earlier this year.
