New awning approved for downtown businesses

SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Business Improvement District Design Review Board unanimously approved a new awning for Framing Matters and Stardust Awards and More at 121 S. Santa Fe Ave. on Thursday. Leah Jayne filed the application on behalf of Framing Matters. The proposed black Sunbrella canvas awning will feature white lettering and consolidate both business identities into a single storefront feature. The board, led by Chair Jessica Herrman, approved the Certificate of Compatibility after confirming the non-illuminated design aligns with downtown aesthetics and does not alter the historical character of the circa-1900 building.

Sign placement on awning slopes sparks debate

SALINA, Kan. — Despite the Design Guidelines for Downtown Salina expressing a preference for awning signage to be placed on the valance, the board approved logos on the sloped, street-facing face of the new awning at 121 S. Santa Fe Ave. Board Secretary Dustin Michelson and city staff noted the board has historically approved similar sloped signage for other businesses within the Salina Business Improvement District. The approved placement includes two logo areas totaling 48 square feet, which falls within the 75 square feet allowed for the property.

Board eyes comprehensive update to 2008 design guidelines

SALINA, Kan. — Prompted by the debate over awning signage placement, board members discussed launching a comprehensive review of the Design Guidelines for Downtown Salina, which have not seen a major overhaul since 2008. City staff suggested organizing a preliminary study session later this year to review the regulations and bring them up to modern standards. The process would likely involve direct coordination with the Business Improvement District Advisory Board.

Retroactive approval granted for Starbucks patio shade

SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Business Improvement District Design Review Board unanimously approved a Certificate of Compatibility for a mocha-colored retractable sunshade installed at the Starbucks patio outside the Homewood Suites by Hilton Salina Downtown at 257 S. Santa Fe Ave. The application was filed by Katherine Kitchen on behalf of Lighthouse Properties. The shade was originally approved as black in December 2024, but city staff noted the installation of the tan fabric during a final inspection in August 2026. The board agreed the installed neutral color aesthetically complements the building's light tan stone.
